I have known Jigmet for over two years. He is the famous high school detective, who helps the police solve messy cases. People think of him as somewhat genius, who he is, but they just have their own presumptions of him, if you ask me, someone who might be the only person who has known him for a long period of time; he is just a boy with the brain of a computer and body of an old man.
Jigmet Wangchok is the paragon of laziness - he literally hates any kind of physical labour. He detests playing any sport, he is appalled by stairs, and he loathes standing and gets sick by wasting his energy for nothing. Yes, he has a sharp brain which maybe works a lot faster than any other person walking the earth. But take that away from him, you will only be left out with a dull frowning zombie.
As a perfect example, while the students of our class were voluntarily cleaning our class at recess. He was pretending to read a book called ''Dusty Answer" by Rosamond Lehmann. Now I say he was "pretending" because he had just been staring at some page of the book for twenty minutes, without turning a single page. Now if I deduced it right, he was maybe just pretending to read so he can keep away from cleaning or the great high school detective doesn't know how reading a book works.
When I was at the end of my wits, I was about to go over to him and force him to at least pick up a broom. But before I reached him, I saw Puthit Angmo enter our class and approach Jigmet.
If I had to describe Puthit Angmo by using just one word, then it would be 'impeccable'. She was good at studies, she was good at all the sports there is, and to make it sound even more unfair for normal kids like me, she was also a stunning beauty.
Watching Puthit Angmo and Jigmet together was very unusual. Not just for me, but the whole class had stopped their work and were looking at the odd couple. All of us were curious to know why the honour student of our school wanted from the famous high school detective.
"Hi, I want you to help me with something." Puthit told Jigmet, who was still pretending to read his book.
"Did you hear what I just said? I want you to-"
"No, I don't want to help you." Jigmet outright refused her. The whole class was filled by loud gasps from the students. Puthit Angmo was the diva of our school, liked by boys, girls and the teachers. No one dared to say no to her for anything she asked.
"Excuse me! Aren't you the famous detective Jigmet Wangchok?" Puthit asked, sounding a bit offended.
Jigmet didn't reply to her and instead still had his eyes on the book, but then a moment later he casually looked up at her and said,
"You are still here?"
At this dull and somehow rude response, Puthit's face got tomato red with anger. I knew that it was my cue to intervene and stop the situation from getting worse.
"I am so sorry for the rude behaviour of my friend." I chipped myself in very smoothly. "And yes of course, he would be happy to help you Puthit-lay."
"Hey, don't put words in my mouth!" I had to slap Jigmet, to make him stay quiet.
"My name is Chowang Konchok by the way." I added and was successfully able to shake hands with the diva.
"So, will he help me or not?" Puthit asked me. She was looking very annoyed.
"Of course, he will-"
"On one condition." he interrupted.
"What condition?" Puthit sounded confused, but so was I.
"You are one of the members of the student council right?" Jigmet asked with a smug face. "I want you to exempt me from the 'students-voluntary-cleaning-bullshit'." he added with a devilish grin.
I didn't see that coming at all; he was aiming for getting himself exempt from the voluntary cleaning. But there was no way she would agree to it - I mean she is a very uptight student, who follows the rules to the letter as it states in the books.
"What!" Puthit exclaimed. "That is ridiculous! No student can be exempt from the voluntary cleaning." she told him.
"Is that so? That's too bad." Jigmet said.
"Then sorry I won't help you either." then he again picked up his book.
That was pretty bold of Jigmet, but I shouldn't have been surprised. He liked manipulating people to get what he wanted - he is a kind of psychopath.
"I will look into it and see what I can do." Puthit said.
"No, I don't need that tentative response of yours. I want your word that you will get me exempted me from the cleaning, definitely." Jigmet told her trying to pressure her more.
For a couple of minutes, Puthit didn't say anything and just stood there thinking hard, like her life depended on it or something.
"Fine." she said after a considerable amount of time and thinking. She kind of whispered and added, "I will get you exempted from the voluntary cleaning."
I was shocked when she said that. Never did I ever think that Jigmet would be capable of manipulating someone like Puthit Angmo.
"Okay, then it's a deal." Jigmet said.
But then Puthit snatched the book off his hands and slammed it shut on the desk.
"Let me properly finish. I wasn't done talking." She told him with fierce gaze.
"I will get you exempted from the cleaning, only if you successfully manage to help me with my case."
I looked at Jigmet and for the first time I had ever seen him taken aback. Then his shocked face turned into a smile, he was looking content by her counter.
"Okay deal." Jigmet said.
"It's a deal then." Puthit said and left our classroom. She looked so bad-ass that the whole class applauded her.
