Tommy had always dreamt of being a hero.
Both of his parents were Pro's and, even from a young age, he had admired everything they would do for people. Saving people, stopping crime, you name it. Yes, Tommy would admit the action part of the job was what excited him the most, although it wasn't his only reason.
Daring and cunning plans and battles, there simply was no other job like heroism in the modern era. It was Tommy's calling, everything he strived to be with such enthralling excitement, he couldn't resist the calling or the warm blanket that surrounded him whenever the thought surfaced.
So of course, his family was adamantly against it. Just his damn luck.
It was first brought up during a family dinner, although- he hadn't expected such an outright negative reaction in Tommy's defense. They always eat rather late at night so the room was mainly lit by the artificial lights hung from the ceiling. Tommy never quite understood why they had a mock chandelier above the dining room table, but it looked cool so why not?
"UA entrance exams are coming up in a few months. I'm going to apply." He commented idly, pushing his food around on his plate.
The previous conversations going on between his family fell silent as they turned towards him. "Absolutely fucking not," Wilbur responded after a short period of silence.
"What- Why not you bitch?!" Tommy exclaimed, slamming his hands down on the table. "If I want to apply, I will! You aren't the boss of me!!"
"I am, however. And I agree with Wilbur, you will not be applying to UA, Tommy." Phil added, his tone stern although his eyes held hidden fear.
"Why not Phil?! You attended UA! Mom attended UA! Why can't I?!?" Tommy exclaimed before covering his mouth as quickly as the words left his mouth. It was basically a forbidden topic to talk about Mumza's hero work.
The table fell silent for a long while. However, just as Tommy was just about to open his mouth to apologize, Phil stood up from the table, nearly knocking over his chair in the process. "You're right, Tommy. Kristin did attend UA, as did I. And look where that got us." His voice was quiet and neutral, but you could see the anger and hurt dancing around in his eyes like a cruel waltz.
"Dad..." Tommy replied, his voice quiet as if he raised it any more the air around them would break like fractured glass.
"No, Tommy. You're not attending UA, end of discussion. Now, you boys clean up dinner, I'm going upstairs."
And so Phil did just that. The remaining members at the table were silent until the eldest spoke up. "You know why you're not allowed to attend UA, Tommy. Why do you continue to persist in trying to become a hero?"
"Why do I try?! Techno, this is my childhood dream! I'm not going to give up just because it's dangerous. That's the equivalent of quitting school because you failed math. And you continue to tell me that's not a viable reason to drop out."
"Why can't you just choose a new dream like me and Techno? I mean, Techno is studying at a university as an English major and doing fencing. I'm making music-"
"Yeah, but you guys are good at that shit, Wilbur. The only thing I'm good at is being a nuisance and screwing things up for people. At least as a hero, I can screw up villains' lives and not people I care about!"
"Tommy- you know that's not true, you're good at plenty of things!" Wilbur insisted, quickly standing up as if that would emphasize his point.
The youngest scoffed at them. "Please, enlighten me then. What am I good at?"
