Chapter 2: Drifting

Mina awoke in her dorm, beads of sweat cascading her face. She leaned over and picked up her phone. "Hmm, I got 4 hours! That's rare." She grumbled. It was Two o'clock in the morning. "Coffee." She mumbled. She rolled to the edge of the bed and stood to her feet. Wearing only a tank top and tights, she slipped on slippers and headed to her bathroom. Her pink skin illuminated as she stepped in and washed her face. She winced slightly from the water. Her scars and fresh self-inflicted wounds stung likes bees but she didn't really care at this point. She had forgotten to bandage them last night so she quickly disinfected them and then wrapped them in bandages. She exited and slipped on leggings and a sweater. She carefully opened her door then waltzed to the elevator and made it to the ground floor.

After exiting the lift, she made it to the kitchen and looked for coffee packs. "Don't bother. Kirishima forgot to refill." Said a dreary voice. "Eep." Mina drew a knife from a holder and turn around. "Oh, sorry." Midoriya stepped into view. "Oh my god, Midoriya! Why'd you scare me like that!?" She gasped, lowering the knife. "Sorry, I woke up earlier than usual for my morning run so I came for some but none was there." He explained. "Damn it." She whispered. "I was unaware you woke up this early," Izuku noted. Mina chuckled awkwardly. "Y-yeah! I-i s-set a new alarm and uhh, it umm I guess I set it too early." She lied hastily. Izuku shrugged. "Too bad. But as I said, there is no coffee."

Mina screamed internally. It was a school day and she needed to function properly. "There's an early hour coffee shop, y'know. We can go if you like." He suggested. Mina acted like she was considering the solution but she was completely against it. It would break one of her rules. Never go anywhere with a guy unless someone knows. "Or... not." Mina didn't want him to feel bad so she impulsively accepted. "No no, I'd love to!"

"Sweet. We can walk or I can give you a piggyback-." Mina interrupted, "We can walk!" Izuku nodded. "Alright, let's go." He beamed.

They quickly went to get shoes and checked out of the compound. It was cold so it was a good thing they both wore sweaters. It was still dark out but the streets were somewhat populated. "So why is a coffee place open at this hour?" Mina queried. "Nocturnal quirks," Izuku answered briefly. "Fair enough. So why were you awake again?"

"I usually get up at 4 for my morning run but I woke up a bit earlier than usual this time for some experimentation." He said casually. "Hmm, okay. I guess that's believable." She slipped. "Believable?"

"I meant most likely than not. Frankly, it's unsurprising that you'd experiment with your routine given the destructive and strength dependent nature of your quirk" She corrected. Izuku raised an eyebrow. "Interesting. I never knew you spoke that well." He noticed. "O-oh umm, I'm just copying Yaomomo. I thought it would be cool to talk like her, y'know?" She lied through her teeth. "Right. Of course. Anyway, we're here."

They stopped at a building called 'Coffee At Night'. "Very original name. Smooth." She jested. "Oh shut up and get inside." Izuku chuckled. She froze for a moment but realized he was being playful and entered. "How do you drink your coffee?" He asked. "Black with sugar." She spoke. "Got it. Just find a seat." He suggested. She did as proposed and watched as he ordered two coffees.

The shop was empty for whatever reason. She didn't bring anything to defend herself. Well, to be fair, she's a hero in training but Izuku is quite literally one of the most powerful men alive or at the very least, above average. She's always felt... afraid of men who she knows are more powerful. It's a reflex of sorts. Analyze and plan for escape. She watched as he placed her coffee in front of her and sat with him. "I hope I didn't take long." Izuku chuckled. "Nah, your good." She chimed.

"So, lemme ask you something," Izuku said somewhat seriously. "Shoot." She took a sip to hide her worry. "If your... lover was constantly upset with you... What would you do?" He asked. She coughed while sipping. "Huh?"

"It's Ochako. She's always angry and never seems to appreciate anything I do nowadays. I mean, I literally do everything for her but... I'm wondering if I did something... wrong." He warmed his hands and looked down, reminiscent of a lost puppy. His green hair swept his face as he waited for a response. "Maybe she just wants more time from you," Mina answered. "Huh?"

"I mean like, you're always training or knocking a villain senseless. Plus, you've changed." She answered. "What?" He asked. "Midoriya-kun, ever since you left us back in our first year, you changed. Frankly, your cold, sometimes distant and you don't really spend alot of time with us. It's like you're still gone."

"Hmm, I guess I'm the problem... As usual. *Sip* In my opinion, I'd say some of you guys have changed as well. The thing is Mina, we're maturing. We don't stay like little kids just because we went through so much. We will grow and sometimes, we will forget. But I will take your advice." Izuku explained softly. "Hmm... I see your point. But don't you think it's a bit rude if you distance yourself?"

"Don't you think it's necessary for me to prepare for a demise? I've learned that heroes die. I've watched them die. One of you could be next." He sulked. "Midoriya, we aren't All Might. We aren't Midnight. They died for us. They sacrificed themselves for the greater good-"

"That doesn't stop me from staying up at night."
