Todays the first day of school. My first day back since my father died. Also known as my birthday. No one knows I'm back. Not even my best friends Scott and Stiles. So walking down the stairs of my house, my mother meets me at the bottom of the stair case.

"Happy 17th birthday!" She said in a sang song voice, holding something behind her back. I know she puts on a brave face for me. And I appreciate it. After my father died my mother, Audelia(likes to be called Delia) hasn't shown any real emotions. And it bugs me to see her putt on a mask. Where she smiles on the outside, but is drowning on the inside.
I start to open my mouth to say 'thank you.' only to be cut off by my mother. "Before you say anything. I know you said, you didn't want anything for your birthday. But I just thought you should have this." She paused before showing me this ancient looking necklace.

"It's beautiful." I commented fascinated with its beauty, turning around and moving my hair out the way as she places it on me.
"It's a family heirloom. It signifies the difference between the sun and moon.Or really the forces of good and evil. Legend has it that this amulet holds great power. Will only bring the person who wears it good luck. And you my dear are the first to wear it since your 5th great Grandmother. " She continued.
