One of the things that made Kai fall in love with Sydney was how pure her heart was. She constantly thought of others around her and tended to put herself last. Which was why Kai made her his priority. He kept everything tainted away from her, so the second he himself turned into the exact person he vowed to keep her away from, he had to end things with her in order to protect her. Divorcing her would mean they would be intimately apart but Kai knew that Sydney would always look out for him because that's just how she is. And that would kill him more than signing those papers would. And just reminiscing about their friendship after they met and how it smoothly transitioned into a romantic relationship made him not want to lose anything he had with her.

Clearly, he was conflicted as his pros outweighed his cons...

1996

Kai explained to Sydney that he had a business deal to take care of in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sydney only asked if it was a new business deal or something he already had and Kai made up something about the sneaker and clothing store he invested in. He did have one but that was in Brooklyn.

Even though it was just two days, Sydney was used to seeing Kai every other day almost so he had Kyle take her out for lunch to help her with her final paper for class. Classes were officially over for the semester on December 8th but Sydney didn't have to report back until the last day just to turn in her paper and complete an evaluation. She was almost done with the 20 page paper, but she needed another pair of eyes to look at it.

Kyle took her to a restaurant decorated for the holidays in a hotel. They sat at a table in the bar section with the items for her paper on the table.

"Your paper is fine. You coulda had Kai read it before he left." Kyle ate some of his rib eye steak off his plate. "He wrote a lot of my papers when I was in undergrad. He would be writin' 'em now too if I didn't have to actually present them and explain it myself now."

"You have to orally read your essays in law school?"

"Just in this class I'm in. Torts."

"How did your first semester go?"

"It was hard as hell. I mean I'm doin' this assistant thing on the low 'cuz I ain't supposed to be workin' at all. But I ain't doin' it next semester. I need to focus."

"Good. What kind of law do you wanna go into?"

"I'm considerin' a lot. I like corporate but I also wanna be able to represent my family if they ever need somebody."

Who knew that he would be representing his brother in his divorce from his friend sitting across from him?

"I don't see why you can't do both. You'll learn about it all, you just intern with what you want to go into primarily. And get the other training another time."

"True. Like, I wish I knew what Giovanni's lawyer gotta do between today an' tomorrow."

Sydney frowned a bit hearing his name. "Huh?"

"Like I know he's tryna get Giovanni out of jail tomorrow but how do you go about doin' that? What if I need to get a family member out of jail? Like do I take classes for corporate law an' criminal law? I don't know what to do."
