Lifetimes of Us

Karan and Amrita were at the clinic. It was her first sonography. Today is the day they get to see the first glimpse of their baby. Sonia accompanied them as she wanted to know the gender of the baby to throw her big brother and sister-in-law a gender reveal party. She was anxious.

The trio were in the ultrasound room and got emotional listening to the heartbeats of the growing fetus.

"Do you want to know the gender of the baby?" the doctor asked.
"No Doctor, but could you give it to us in an envelope?" Karan asked.
"Sure, Doctor Sakhuja," she replied. She headed over to the computer and printed out a copy. She folded it then placed it in an envelope and handed it over to Karan who then gave it to Sonia. She had a smile on her face that would brighten ten rooms.

After following up with the doctor, the trio headed home.

Later that night, Sonia, Kabir and Angad announced that there's going to be a gender reveal party on the weekend. Apparently she needed help with the decorations and planning, so who else fits the role perfectly than her other two older brothers. Sonia even made a call to Meera to help with the planning but keeping the secret of the gender all to herself.

Saturday

Amrita woke up in the morning feeling less nauseous than the previous morning. This morning she was both excited and nervous, as it was the day of the party. A puja is being kept in the midday followed by the reveal.

Gunit and Dadaji were welcoming the priest when Karan brought Amrita to the front.
"You look so pretty, bhabhi," Sonia told Amrita.
"You look pretty too, Soni," Amrita said.

Amrita was showered with compliments from the family members. Soon it was time to conduct the puja. After an hour or so, they bid adieu to the pandit.

It was time for the reveal. No one could not attend, there was a limit of gatherers- so it was just the Sakhujas with Meera, her siblings and Shabana Appa along with Amrita's parents and elder brother.

Karan and Amrita were continuously grinning as they were excited to find out the gender of their baby. Karan even betted with his brothers about it. He was adamant that it was a girl, while the other two said it was a boy. He didn't want to place a bet on his unborn child's gender as he did not care whether it was a boy or a girl, he would love the child more than he loved life. Afterall, this was his and Amrita's symbol of their love.

Everyone was getting restless waiting for the reveal but Sonia was adamant on getting them to wait for the surprise. A few minutes later, she came outside with a cake in her hand assisted by Meera. Kabir and Angad had already setted up a table in the center of the courtyard.

"Okay, you two impatient ones. Come on now, it's time for your surprise. I do not want to create more suspense before one of you kills me today," Sonia said to her brother and sister in law, giggling.

Amrita and Karan sliced the cake but the colour of the inside was green. Everyone began laughing, Kabir even cracked a joke that his niece or nephew is an alien baby. Amrita has begun to get annoyed with the suspense.

"Sonia Sakhuja, if you don't tell me the gender of my child, I'll go to my room right now.

Sonia was giggling, enjoying irritating Karan and Amrita both. Amrita got up and headed straight to her room. Upon her arrival at the door, she found it locked.
"Karan!" she shouted.

Him, on hearing her voice rushed to her thinking something went wrong.
"What happened, Amrita? Why are you shouting?" He asked her.
"The door is locked. Who did it?" She asked.
"I don't know. It must be one of those monkeys," he told her and called the mischief makers and their accomplices. The entire family gathered at the door. They were all worried upon finding the door locked.

"Don't worry, bhai. We closed the door and here's the key. Your surprise is inside," Kabir said, handing the key over to Karan. Everyone was eagerly anticipating for Karan to hurry the task at hand.

As he opened the door, a yellow balloon hit him in his face. The parents were then informed that in the room was either a pink or a blue balloon and that they'll have to find it in order for all the suspense to be done with. Amrita put Karan in charge of finding the balloon.

Two minutes later, Karan was too happy to move. He was ecstatic. Amrita saw him not moving and began heading towards him. He had the balloon in his hands and turned towards her. As she saw the balloon's colour, tears began flowing from her eyes.

As she moved to give everyone a view, congratulatory wishes were heard in the room. Meera, Divya and the Sakhuja siblings start squealing.

Everyone took turns to hug and wish both Amrita and Karan. They both were gushing and grinning that baby Sakhuja was a little Karan. Angad and Kabir cornered him and booed that he lost. He told them he doesn't care whether he lost the bet but he had won in life and he doesn't care whether it was a boy or girl, it was his and Amrita's baby.

Amrita was beyond happy on finding out the gender, it came as a surprise for her. She always wanted a boy, so he can be just like Karan. His personality, everything about him, and that would have made their baby the perfect human and now her wish is coming true and she couldn't be happier.

Later that night

Amrita and Karan were in their room talking about their baby and making plans for her delivery which is just about two months away. After a while, Amrita was in deep thoughts when Karan grabbed her attention.

"What's wrong, Heer?" he asked.
"Nothing. I'm just wondering about when the little one comes, how happy we would be. I mean we are already happy but it will be doubled once he makes his entry into our world," Amrita said.
"Not just us, our family is very happy. Didn't you see their faces glowing? Not just happiness, but we will have more responsibilities. Little Sakhuja will have everyone dancing to his tunes once he comes.

"I'm happy and content. With you by my side I have nothing to worry about. I know you will be there to guide and support me through this," Amrita told Karan.

"Of course. I'll be there with you and our little one. And our family is always at our backs. This is not just for one lifetime. Didn't I promise you seven lifetimes, seven lifetimes of us? he asked her. She nodded in confirmation as she slowly drifted off to sleep.
