"I'm leaving," I called to my stepmother through the kitchen.
"Okay," she replied.
"Have a nice day," I said as I grabbed my red jacket and put it on.
No reply.
She didn't even ask if I needed a ride.
She didn't even realize that I was leaving half an hour earlier than I usually did.
That was when I knew for sure. I was positive that the only reason that she was staying was because of my father's money and position.
She didn't love me, and I started to think that she never loved father either. When he died about a year ago of poison, my stepmother, Reina, inherited everything. His small fortune, his position as mayor, and custody of me.
Father always treated me as if I was the most important person in the world, but I was nothing to Reina. My mother died when I was quite young, but I remember her. She was kind and very beautiful. She had a sort of warm, comforting aura about her. Father always said that I was just like her.
Reina was nothing like her.
I loved Reina, I really did, but she didn't love me back, and I wasn't sure why. My friends would help me figure it out. Ella and Rory were the closest to family (other than Reina) that I really had.
Ella was a dreamer. She was a hardcore optimist, which was good ,yet strange, in her situation. Both of her parents had passed, like mine, and she was under custody of a snobby stepmother, also like me. She also had two bitchy stepsisters. Her mom died when she was really young, but her father died the same year that my father died. Ella and I have been friends since the womb. Our mothers were very close friends and were the Maid of Honor at each other's weddings. I remember Ella's mother, she was a lot like mine. She was very kind, but also very courageous. Ella looked just like her.
Rory was the dumb blonde of the group. She made up for it with her beauty though. Rory's name is actually Aurora, but Ella had a lot of trouble pronouncing that when we were little, so we stuck with Rory. Aurora's parents are both still alive, but they had really crazy work schedules so she stayed with her three awesome aunts. They were all short, hefty women who loved to spoil the three of us whenever we had sleepovers. They got into arguments all the time over silly things, and they were very entertaining. Rory has been in our little clique since second grade, whenever she asked if we knew how to spell 'bracelet'.
The three of us have the strongest possible bonds that friends could possibly have.
I smiled at these warm thoughts as I walked to school.
When I reached the property, there was hardly anyone there. That's thirty minutes earlier for you.
I sat under the old oak tree that we usually stay under during break and before and after school.
I pulled my Algebra 1 textbook out of my bag and started to finish my homework.
I was on the last problem whenever the first morning bus load arrived. I recognized The Prince's bus.
Okay, just to be clear, there are no actual princes anywhere near Pride Rock Middle, but my clique gives "code names" to all other cliques to identify them.
The Princes are the heart-throbs. The leader of their group (and my ultimate crush since I laid eyes on him) was David Castoletti. He was freaking gorgeous, and super sweet. He had two right hand men, James Adler (Ella's dream man) and Phillip Stevens (Rory's bae). There was also Eric Siren, Steve Shang, Nathan Maldonia, Gavin Rousseau, and Henry Morrison.
I caught myself staring at them as they hopped off of the bus, looking as perfect as ever. David noticed me and waved.
David Castoletti freaking waved at me. Oh my gosh, I thought to myself as I felt my face heat up.
Then he started to walk over to where I was sitting.
I quickly calmed myself with a few breaths and acted like I had been doing my Algebra.
"Hey," he said in his silky voice.
"Hi," I replied, looking up to acknowledge his presence.
"I was wondering," he started, rubbing the back of his neck.
"You can't cheat off of me," I said without thinking. I looked down, embarrassed at my sudden outburst.
His eyes widened with surprise. "No, I wasn't going to ask that," he corrected. "I understand the Algebra for once."
For a moment I thought that he was going to ask me out, but I quickly dismissed the silly thought.
"I was just going to ask if you thought that I should audition for the school play," he resumed.
"Have you ever been in a play before?" I asked.
"I've been in one or two," he replied.
"Well it's settled then," I stated. "If you have experience and you enjoyed it, go for it."
"Okay," he nodded, acting surprised at my answer. "Thanks. See you Adrianna!"
And then he was gone.
"See you," I called.
