"Hey, don't you have to go see Aidan?" Ariel asked as we started down the main hallway to the library, which was where we met Belle and Miranda every morning.
"No, he doesn't arrive 'till later," I corrected.
"You guys still into that 'forbidden love' thing?" she asked.
"My dad hasn't got any less picky," I sighed. "And his home life hasn't gotten any better, so yeah. It's still 'forbidden love'. But it doesn't matter that my dad doesn't approve. He doesn't even know. But I don't feel bad about it at all. Aiden and I like each other, so we should be together. My dad doesn't have the right to pair me up with the guy that he finds suitable."
"Powerful thoughts for an eighth grader," she exasperated.
"The more mature the better."
"But you have to leave room for a little fun."
"And that's what our relationship is."
By the time that we finished this conversation, we had arrived at the library. Ariel gave me an exaggerated grimace as I opened the door. She was clearly worried about the lecture that she would get from Belle.
"Time to face the music," I told her.
The library was empty except for Mrs. Radcliffe, the librarian, and Belle and Miranda, who sat in the corner of the fiction section.
Belle had a kind of unconscious need to be in the library as often as possible, and it was a place where none of us would be bothered by people who annoyed us. Hence this was where we met.
"I didn't do my homework," Ariel said plainly once we arrived at the back table.
"Ariel!" Belle exclaimed, a disappointed tone suddenly taken on by the brunette. "I can't believe you!"
"Good morning to you all as well," Miranda said sarcastically.
"I'm sorry, I just couldn't get it," Ariel whined.
"Do it now," Belle commanded.
"What?"
"Do it now, or I won't bring you my latest fluff scene."
Belle had a thing for fan fiction writing. The four of us were in mostly the same fandoms, so Belle's writing was greatly appreciated by all. The fluff scenes were a particular favorite of Ariel's, so threatening to take away the redhead's fan fiction was like threatening to confiscate her creativity feeding tube.
Immediately, Ariel sat down and began to do her homework. I took the chair beside her, and the three of us who were not benge-homeworking began to talk about simple things.
"So how's it going with Aiden?" Miranda asked me as the conversation started.
"It is going wonderfully," I replied, feeling my face heat up. Even though I wasn't uncomfortable with talking about my relationship with the troublemaker, I still got girly when I talked about him with my best friends.
"Has anything progressed?" Belle urged.
"He kissed my cheek on Friday," I said, looking over at Ariel's math. "That's the newest update."
"You two are so cute together," Ariel piped in.
"Work," Belle commanded.
"I need help."
"Fire away."
"This is asking me to find the volume of a sphere," she started. "What's the formula for that again?"
"Volume equals four-thirds pi times the radius cubed," Belle answered automatically.
"Thanks boo bear," the ginger grinned.
