I couldn't help but giggle quietly in excitement as I pulled into the parking lot.

It was our anniversary. He had instructed me to meet him at our favorite park in a yellow dress and something to keep me warm.

I blushed just thinking about what he had planned. I had taken extra care to curl my lace front and I'd even went to the mall to have my makeup done. I wanted to look perfect.

It was our two year anniversary, and I was so excited to have plans this year. Our last anniversary was ruined by finances, pride, and expectations. This year though, would be different.

I grabbed my gift for him from the passenger seat. Nervous, I fiddled with the gift bow.

I took a breath, stepping out into the crisp winter breeze. I smoothed my dress out and finger combed my curls before scanning the park for him.

I was so nervous, I left my phone on the bathroom counter. I had no choice but to wander around looking for him.

Thankfully, I didn't have to walk far in the frigid cold before I spotted him under a midsized tree, checking his watch.

I giggled, nervous for him to see me. What would he think of my dress and my hair? I sucked my stomach in just as he saw me.

He smiled, standing to meet me half way.

He pulled me into a hug before further examining my outfit. "The yellow would've looked better with a darker sweater, the light blue isn't really a good match"

I couldn't help but sink, I had spent so much time getting ready. I knew he'd be critical but I was determined not to call for his advice.

Still, I wanted this to be a good anniversary, so I brushed it off. I just wish he could compliment me sometimes.

I frowned, seeing her face fall briefly before a smile reappears.

I immediately regretted my comment. I knew she put a lot of work into getting ready and she's already self conscious.

I smiled , grabbing her hand to twirl her around in front of me and back into my arms. "Babygirl, you look so good in this dress. You did a really good job on your hair and makeup" I complimented , pulling one of her curls

Although she's brown skinned, I could tell she was blushing as her grin widened.

"Happy anniversary baby, you ready for your surprise?"

She nods vigorously, looking around.

I smile, "alright, right this way beautiful"

I led her toward our picnic site a little walk away.

She squeals and jumps like a happy little girl at the site of our picnic.

"Daddy, it's a picnic!" She exclaimed, jumping into my arms for a big hug.

I chuckled, "yes, babygirl. I promised you a picnic one day. It took a year and 9 months but here you go"

She hugged me tight, not saying much.

"You okay?"

She nodded, "I'm just so happy, I don't know what to say. I didn't think we were ever going to have a picnic " she smiled, wiping her tears.

"Aw baby, I've been planning this for a while. Come here, let's eat"

I helped her get situated on the blanket in front of the small fire. She looked so eager, grinning from ear to ear.

I prepared her plate from the open basket, I gave her 1/2 of her favorite sandwich and some pita chips with her favorite soup.

"Thank you da—Derek!"
