The brimful brightness flushed through me like a shower rain, and washed all over me, in a way that made me shut my eyes for long seconds and open it slowly to take in the so much brightness all at once. Everything in the room was white, ranging from the furniture to the paint, the electronics, the curtains and even the attire of the audience of the room. Only the people are brown or dark. The brightness together with the whiteness was in complete contradiction with the darkness of the night, just like I was odd amidst them. I was in a blue denim Jean pants and a casual black T-shirt. And just like my Mother knelt before them the previous day, I knelt between the circle of the same faces that visited our home with the visit of havoc.

“The Ewu confraternity is the oldest around here…”

Akin, the man who was wearing the camo durag the previous night started. Sneaking looks at him now confirmed his personality which I never got to find out until last night.

“…It was founded and created several decades ago by a fallen comrade, Professor Ikporokpu Yisau…”

I wasn't sure whether to remain on my knees or stand up because everyone else in the room rose to their feet at the mention of the name, so I resulted in bowing my head, which I believed they were fine with because he continued his speech anyways.

“…This confraternity was created for one main purpos—power—within and beyond. With only great, successful outstanding, and well-respected comrades as members…”

That statement just explained it all that theirs was not a group of nonentities or mediocrities or touts who did street fights, as the Akin speaking was the representative of every student in the school.

“…The total number of the members of this confraternity at a time can never exclude seven. And because the present leader of the confraternity just fell, it is upon me, as the second in command of this legendary to assess members to be initiated…”

I noticed that they all just bowed their heads slightly and sadly when Akin said their present leader had just fallen, unlike the first time when they all rose to their feet. Since they bowed their heads slightly the second time, I decided not to do anything because I don't know how more to show respect on my knees.

“…When Tadex informed us in the
morning, we agreed to bring you in without a second thought. Not only because you are a perfect candidate, but also because you have a high sense of emotions enough to lay everything else aside and come here to save your mother. It is exactly your type that we need to move this forward; intelligence, reputation, emotions, are all the assets that you possess and we need…”

I sighed in exasperation, even though I would forever be grateful to Tadex for explaining everything to them so well that I don't need to tender any explanation on my own behalf.

“…According to the power vested in me as the second in command of this Ewu confraternity to act as the commander in his absence as documented in the founding constitution of this legendary confraternity, I hereby announce your pre-initiation rites today after which you will become a full-fledged Ewu member…”

At that point, fear raced through me and rendered me obviously shivering at the mention of initiation, it was hard to hide with everything I had read and watched about cult initiations. I once read about a certain cult that eat raw human meat just to be initiated. Some got ganged raped or get to gang rape, and some are given a number of girls to sleep with in order to pass the initiation rites. And once one makes his intention known to join them, one either follows the rites or follow the dead.

“…Our initiative rites are the simplest. However, Getting in here is very easy and gentle, but getting out of hereafter becoming a member is a myth so impossible to achieve. You are smart and I shouldn't be telling you this, I assume…”
