Painter's phone buzzes in her hand, she opens a text message and sees that her friend Bex has sent her a photo of a small infant dressed in a leather jacket and jeans. The accompanying message reads only "Fenix." with a black heart emoji.

Painter

(to herself, after a labored sigh)

"They make distressed jeans for babies?"

Painter calmly locks her phone, stands up, puts the phone in her sweater pocket, and begins walking to her car. Enroute to the hospital, Painter gives herself a small soothing pep talk. She parks her car, walks into the hospital lobby, and following signs for "Labor and Delivery" she boards the elevator. Just before her stop, she takes her phone from her pocket, calls a contact titled "Scorpio Overlord", steps off the elevator and waits to hear the 2009 hit song "Shots" by LMFAO. Painter walks in the direction of the music to a room numbered 684. She takes a deep breath and unnecessarily kicks in the door to a private room. It causes a scene, the nurse from the desk across the hall rushes in behind Painter shouting-

Nurse

"You cannot just kick in a door in a maternity-"

She cuts off the nurse, and stares down the young woman laying in the bed.

Painter

(agitated and confused, shouting)

"Bex, you send me a text that he was born? And you named him Fenix?"

Bex is laying in the hospital bed with a full face of makeup. It looks like her tawny brown hair had been recently curled, it had certainly been recently highlighted as the golden strands of hair catch the sunlight from the nearby window. Ever ready for the photo-op, she barely looks like she just had a baby.

Bex

(not startled, somewhat expecting this level of dramatics)

"Look at him. He is obviously a Fenix."

Painter walks over to the bassinet just to the left of Bex's bed. The baby is small and rosey but calm for a newborn in a room filled with emphatic shouting.

Painter grabs a hold of his hand and lifts up the baby's tiny fingers decorated with a swipe of black nail polish she knows to be "City Girl Abyss," Bex's signature shade.

Painter

(more shocked than before, less loud but somehow more agitated)

"Of course he looks like a "Fenix," you already painted his nails. Only a baby named Fenix would have his nails painted black 10 hours after he is born."

Bex

(smirking, tilting her head)

"His nails were honestly so embarrassing, Painter."

Bex makes an "ick" noise and sticks out her tongue, then leans over to pick up the baby from the bassinet and lay him in her lap.

Painter stares back and forth between Bex and the baby for a moment before she speaks again.

Painter

(quickly accepting all that she has learned about the baby)
