I woke up the next day to my phone buzzing next to my ear. I picked it up and looked at the screen. It was a text from Jake.
Jake: Hey smiley Riley! I have to talk to you it's really important. Call me later.
What could he mean?
I spent so long thinking about the message that I lost track of the time. I was going to be late. I quickly got dressed, put my hair in a ponytail and ran out the door. I got to the bus stop and saw the bus turning the corner. Right on time. I got in and sat with Ella. She told me about how much she hates her math teacher and how he smells like onions, but I wasn't paying attention. I was too busy thinking about the message Jake sent to me. "Riley? Are you okay?" She asked concerned. "Yea. It's just I got a message this morning from my best friend back home and it said that he had something important to tell me" I told her. "Well maybe he got a new puppy that reminded him of you" she grinned. "Ha ha very funny".
We got off the bus and went to our lockers. I saw Alex on the other end of the hall and waved he waved and started walking towards us. "Hey Riley" He smiled. "Hey. What happened last night? You never texted me back." I asked him. I don't know why I asked, I knew it was none of my business. "I just felt kinda sick so my mom took me to he doctor for a checkup. I'm fine now though." I wasn't sure about that his eyes seemed very red and his face was pale, but I didn't want to grill him so I just said "Okay." We all walked to chemistry together. Alex and I sat at our table. While we were supposed to be working on our assignment he just kept staring at me with a huge grin on his face. To be honest it gave me a creepy feeling, but at the same time, I liked it. I just laughed at continued working until Mrs. Bush made an announcement, " Alright listen up! We will be starting our projects today! Now, since it will require partners I have assigned it to simply be your desk partner." Alex gave a huge smile and said " Guess your my partner". I was excited he was my partner it meant we could get to know each other better, but I wasn't sure if that was a good thing.
The rest of the day dragged on slowly. I had Ella in most of my classes and that was good. The most exciting thing that happened was Marcus McCoy laughed so hard in algebra that snot started dripping out of his nose. That was more disgusting than exciting. Finally the bell for the end of the day rang. I was walking and talking to Ella when Alex comes up and taps me on my shoulder. "Hey so I was thinking could we maybe go to the library later to research our project..?" He asked. "Uh yea sure, um I'll meet you at seven." I really didn't want to go. I was planning on calling Jake later that day. I needed to know what he was going to tell me but I couldn't say no to Alex so I just said yes.
I just kinda lingered around my house unto seven o'clock. When the hand finally hit seven I grabbed my books and told my mom I was going to meet Alex at the library. "Ooooooo is this 'Alex' your boyfriend?" She asked winking and raising an eyebrow. "No mom! Jeez" she just laughed, "Okay, okay. Have fun!" I headed out the door. I decided to ride my bike to the library since it was only a few blocks away.
When I got to the library I heard my phone ringing in my bag. I took out and held up he screen so I could see who was calling me. It was Jake again. My heart started pounding a mile a minute. My fingers fiddled with the buttons on the phone until finally I was able to press 'Answer'. "Hello?" I was so nervous I don't know why. " Hey smiley Riley! You actually answered this time." "Yeah I know I'm sorry I didn't have time to respond today." I felt so bad. "It's alright. So hey I needed to talk to you." This was it. " I moving to L.A. Riley!" My heart almost leapt out of my chest. I was so happy! "Oh my gosh! Really? Ahhhhhh!!!" I didn't realize I was screaming and jumping up and down. "Sshhhh!" The librarian told me. Oops. But I couldn't control my excitement! My best friend was moving to see me! "I leave in a week." I was so excited I needed to hug someone. And of course Alex walked up to me at that moment with a wired expression in his face. And then I was hugging him. I have no idea why I did it but I did. And he hugged me back which was weird. We stayed hugging each other until I heard Jake's voice coming out of my phone, "Uh, hello?" I forgot I was still on the line! "Oh sorry Jake! Um is it ok if I call you later I'm...studying" I didn't know why I paused at that last word. "Uh yeah sure, bye". He ended the call and I put the phone away. I looked up and saw Alex with a huge grin on his face arms crossed. I rolled my eyes and started walking to the computer room in the back. He quickly followed me and asked, "So..Who's Jake?" "Just a friend." I told him. "Well he must've said something important on the phone if you were jumping around like that." He laughed. "Well yeah it kind of was important and excuse me for expressing my feelings." "Hey I'm not judging!" He put his hands in the air like he was surrendering. I rolled my eyes at him again.
We stayed at the library until 9 o'clock researching and putting our project together. We were only supposed to be there for an hour but we got carried at having fun and laughing. He tells the corniest jokes. "What kind of shoes does a thief wear? Sneakers." Then he would burst out laughing like a maniac. I'd start laughing too because at that point everyone was looking at us and telling him to be quiet. We settled down and I started getting I tired. He offered to take me home in his truck and I said yes mostly because I wasn't planning to stay out this late and it was dark. We gathered our stuff and headed towards the door. On our way out the librarian gave us a "I'll find you" kind of look. We got in his car as soon as we got my bike in the back. He drove like a like he laughed. Like a maniac. Maybe he was and I didn't notice because of how cute he was. Ugh I couldn't think like that I loved Jake.
Right?
He pulled into my driveway and opened the door for me. As I was getting out he grabbed my arm. I jumped, I didn't know what he was doing. "Wait". I sat back in my seat. "Um.." he scratched his neck, "would you..l-like to um..g-go on a..um..a date..uh with me?" He stuttered. I was shocked I only met the guy two days ago. Even though i knew I kinda liked him. I decided to take a risk. "Yes. I would like that. Where do you wanna go?" His eyes grew wide. "Uh I was thinking the bowling alley t-tomorrow..um a-at eight?" He stammered. "Sure. You'll pick me up?" "Uh yeah I'll call you." His eyes grew wider. "Okay, goodnight." I said as I hopped out of the truck. He got my bike down and I put it away. "Goodnight" he waved as I walked through the door. As soon as it shut my mom started grilling me with questions. I just told her it was fine and went upstairs to go to bed.
I had out on my pajamas and snuggled under the blankets. I was drifting off to sleep thinking, 'I, Riley Davis, have a date with Alex and I'm happy.' At least I thought I was until I thought about Jake. Jake. What about Jake? I still love him.
