Chapter 15:
The next couple of days went by like a dream. I couldn't believe that a guy could completely turn my life and make me experience so many emotions. I have always been a loner but, with Jared, nothing seems to bother me. My race car was still being repaired and I could not be happier that I could have both the car and the guy of my dreams.I never thought of myself as someone who would actually settle down, but here we are smiling and laughing everyday with this guy who completes me.
We have spent so much time together and have seen many races and even drove cars on tracks and competed with each other. He seemed to be very interested in racing at the Grand Prix and I was ready to support him and help him train.
Today was the day that I could go and see my car as it was supposed to be ready when I woke up to a cell phone ringing. I figured that it would just turn off and since Jared did not even wake up, I waited for it to stop. But , unfortunately it did not, so I got up and discovered it was Jared's phone with an unknown number. I picked it up and answered the call.
"Hello?," I whispered into the phone so as not to wake up Jared.
"Hello, who are you since I called Jared's phone?," spoke a female's voice.
"Um....I'm a friend of his. Do you need something." I continued, not knowing how to respond.
"Well, I do not know who you think you are to be here with Jared at this hour. But I'm his girlfriend and if you could tell him that I have something important to talk to him about I'd appreciate it if you tell him," she said. I stood there with my mouth dry and totally shocked. I couldn't understand. He had a girlfriend this whole time and did not tell me. He was in a stable relationship and he told me that he wanted to spend time with me and get to know me. I even told him how I felt about him. At this point I felt so dumb that I couldn't continue talking. I was feeling nauseous.
My mind was not working properly as I was still processing so I hung up the phone and grabbed my things and hired a cab to go to the mechanic, pay for my race car and head back home.
I felt utterly betrayed and was so shocked that I didn't even have the will to cry. I could not even phantom why he would do such a thing to me when all I did was be there for him. I thought that we were growing and moving further into our relationship, but that was not the case. I did not matter to him.
I felt like I was on autopilot as I handed the mechanic a cheque with the money and got in my car and drove off. I could feel my heart breaking as I felt the hot tears streaming down my face and praying to myself to have the courage to leave and forget all about him. All I wanted to do is go home. Home where i was safe from all these lies and stupid people.
With each minute I drove away, I felt like I was suffocating and the void inside me got bigger. He was someone I imagined spending the rest of my life with and to be betrayed like that felt like a dagger going straight into my heart.
The journey back seemed never ending and when I finally arrived home, I jumped in bed and did my best to shut my eyes. Then I remembered that he knew where I lived since I had just given him my address to send my McLaren. I could not bear looking at him because I knew that I would fall for him again.
My thoughts were interrupted as my cell rang. It was Melissa from work and I picked it up.
"Hi boss, sorry to interrupt but something about work came up and I figured that it was better to tell you," she said over the phone.
"Tell me," I said, cutting to the chase.
"Do you remember the email I sent about 8 months ago, to that particular company that was known globally? Well, they have just responded and have arranged a meeting with you on Wednesday to talk about collaborating and becoming partners."
"That is wonderful news Melissa," I replied as I heaved a sigh of relief.
"You are to meet in Greece. I should book your flights right?," she continued with a tone just as excited as mine.
"Yes and make it as early as possible, I can't wait to go to Greece," I continued as I planned on making this trip a distraction to my feelings.
"Let me check the flights, hold on," I did as she told me and a minute later she found me a flight that departed tomorrow at 3 o'clock and decided that I'd stay there for 2 weeks after. That is why I hired Melissa in the first place. She is so efficient and knew exactly what I wanted to be done.We agreed on her booking it for me and hung up.
That was my life. One door closes and another one opens. I was so ecstatic that I would be visiting such a beautiful country in the middle of summer. This was a great distraction and a way to separate myself from the Jared situation. I needed a break from all this and this was a wonderful opportunity so that when I'd get back, I'd focus on my company and never look at guys again.
I got up from my sofa and headed to my bedroom to pack. Let's see what Greece has to offer.
