Riley on the side ^.^\\
.:.::.:::.::::.:::::.::::::.:::::::
Riley was okay, he guessed, but he didn't really seem to know the meaning of that word. Sure, he wasn't dying or in a state of grief, but was that okay? Was okay just a word to describe when you aren't dying but you aren't great either, because in that case Riley was okay.
EARLY THAT DAY
Riley had gone to school today with a slight smile.
Today was the day they got to show off their charms and finally find their "soul mates".
You see Riley was in 12th grade, a senior, and on March 16th of each year the seniors could receive their charms from their parents. These charms were ones they were given at birth to determine the personality of it's owner.
The reason you could only show them on this day was that it was far enough from the end of the school year where the teachers to teach everyone about the charms and for the rejects.
The rejects are the ones who are shunned by the ones they are supposed to love. The day is close enough to the end of their school years so that if their soul mate is in the school, they wouldn't have to carry that burden for long.
Putting all that aside, today was March 16th.
Riley would be loved for the first time in his life today and that was a wonderful feeling. He refused to believe that he would be a reject. He liked to keep on the bright side of his life. That was the only thing he had to keep himself going, the hope of everything getting better.
When he walked into the school, he was, of coarse, left alone, but many people were being asked questions and holding out their charms for people to see.
He had no need to wait in this caps and wait for someone to approach him, there was a ceremony for everyone who hadn't found their significant other.
Riley went on to first period, painfully aware of all of the lovey dovey shit going on around him.
He took his seat and waited. He had seen this happen in the grades before him enough times to know that they had to wait for the announcement to go to the auditorium.
After about 15 minutes of waiting , he heard the announcement and flew out the door, not bothering to wait for any of his fellow classmates. When he reached the auditorium he swung the doors open and took his place in line.
The administrators called each student up one by one while Riley scanned the area. He look through the line of people, wondering who his match would be. He had dreamt of this moment since he was little, he used to read books about the soulmate ceremony and knew this was a big deal. He would be with this man or woman for the rest of his life.
Finally after another 10 minutes, Riley's name was called. He eagerly climbed the short set of stairs, missing a few but making most. When he had reached the top of the stage, he was frozen in the path of hundreds of eyes.
"Mr. Marz, please show me your charm," the administrator, Mrs. Canria, spoke in her dull, emotionless voice, as Riley pulled out his charm.
The charm Riley had was a strange one, he had to admit. It was a pentagram, the symbol used to protect against evil entities. He wasn't completely sure what it meant, but he was pretty sure it had something to do with his strange fascination with fire. He also had to guess that it was quite bad, as his parents looked at him with, not hatred, but weariness, this morning and Mrs. Canria was looking at him in awe and fear at this moment.
When the moment of emotion was gone from Mrs. Canria's normally emotionless face, they continued the ceremony.
"If anyone else here has the same charm as Riley, please step forward," Mrs. Canria spoke calmly into the microphone as the person he least expected stepped forward.
"Dante Evans, do you accept Riley Marz as your soulmate, your match, and your eternal love?"
"No"
Well that was a heartbreaking discovery.
