Chapter 2

That was not what Riley expected.

He was supposed to be loved, not hated, not feared, and definitely not rejected.

When the ceremony was over, Riley was declared a reject along with a few others. They were all crying except Riley, he wanted to show them he was strong, he could do this. He did know that he would cry, though, he could already feel the sting of tears behind his hazel eyes.

When they were released from the ceremony, school was over. Riley wasn't sure to be happy about not having to be near Dante or sad. The bigger part of him knew he would be shunned, butter tiny optimistic side of him told him that maybe Dante didn't mean it.

He was very upset to find that that part of him was so terribly wrong as he was walking out. He was keeping his head held high, even through the pain he was going through, when he looked around, scanning his surroundings.

And boy he wished he didn't.

There to his right, leaning against the the side of the school, was the boy who was supposed to love him. And he was kissing another girl. A girl in the year bellow them. This was exactly the kind of thing he did not want. He wanted to be loved be his beloved, cherished. Obviously, that wasn't happening.

This time, Riley refused to hold it in, there was no way he could keep his sadness hidden now. As a sob wreaked havoc through his body, the two bodies pressed closet together broke apart and turned around.

---

Dante scowled, how could this boy be so naive, thinking Dante could ever love anyone. He was an emotionless creature, as cold as ice.

And then he remembered no one actually knew that.

People thought Dante was a sweetheart, that he loved the people he fucked. That was a lie. All of it. He could not love, his soul was cold, but deep down, he knew he longed for it.

Dante craved the love and happiness that came naturally to others.

Maybe, he thought, just maybe, this boy could be different. Maybe there's a reason he's the person I'm paired with.

Of coarse, he had had all of these thoughts earlier, during the ceremony, but he had dismissed them, believing them lies.

But now, seeing the young boy cry, he knew he had to do something He did not wish to hurt Riley, he just knew he could not love him like Riley had so hoped.

As Riley slipped away, Dante knew something had to be done. He could not leave Riley like this, so heartbroken.

So he thought of a plan.

---

As Riley sped away from the scene, he was not angry at Dante, just a bit sad. Riley could not blame the man for not loving him, he was nothing but a tiny shed in a neighborhood of grand houses. Not the best analogy, but his mind was so clouded with fear of the future and sadness.

What was he supposed to do now? His reason for living and motivation is gone. There is nothing left for him here.

Nothing.

Riley shook his head, bidding the negative thoughts goodbye, as he stepped into the comfort of his two story home.

His parents were home, which was not a good sign. They would want to know what had happened, who he was paired with, but he didn't want to talk about it.

When he walked past the living room where his parents were seated, he tiptoed, hoping to get out of the conversation. He had almost made it to the stairs when his mother called his name.

"Ry, how was the ceremony? Who was your pair?" His mother asked, slight concern laced in her voice. He couldn't blame her. If your only child came home on the day he was supposed to be paired crying, you would be concerned too.

"I don't want to talk about it," he spoke calmly, letting his feet carry him closer to the stairs.

His father stood up and quickly reached for his son's arm, "C'mon son, don't be like that."

Riley's head whipped around, catching both of his parents off guard.

"I said I don't want to talk about it," his voice was still calm, though the flames engulfing his clenched fists said otherwise.

Riley's father jumped back, cradling his burnt arm as Riley stormed up the steps.

When he got to his room he laid down on his bed, simply thinking of the events of the day, slightly scared of himself.
