“Remember, just act married!” Mary Margaret’s voice advised through Regina’s earwig.

“I’m not sure they need to act,” the slightly muffled voice of Red said in the background.

“Ha, ha,” Regina said sarcastically. She scanned her surroundings for her partner.  “Miss Swan, where are you? It’s about time to catch this crocodile.”

“Hey, that’s MY nickname for him,” the slightly petulant voice of Hook put in.

“Yeah well, maybe you should have copyrighted it when you had the chance,” came a reassuringly familiar voice. Emma slipped onto the barstool next to Regina, slipping the phone she’d been busy pickpocketing across to her for tracing.

“David, we’ve got his phone.” Regina said, reading off the number for the team to trace.

“Right.” The businesslike voice of their team leader paused. “We only have so long before he realizes it’s missing, and he’ll know quite well who took it. Get back up to your room and act normal. I’m sending Red up.”

Regina and Emma exchanged looks, grinning at the groan that Red gave David.

They followed instructions, making their way up to their hotel room and locking the door behind them.

This was the part Regina had been looking forward to. She snuck up behind Emma, wrapping her arms around the younger woman’s waist. “We’re meant to act married now, Swan,” she whispered in her ear.

Emma turned in Regina’s clasped arms, planting her lips solidly on hers and pulling them both sideways onto the room’s single queen-sized bed. Their evening dresses were quickly disposed of, kicked to the floor only a few feet away from where Red crouched in her werewolf form. With her heightened sense of hearing, Red could hardly help but hear every single moan, cry, and shifting of weight taking place on the bed just above her. She growled, covering her snout with her paws and making a mental note to forcefully suggest a reassignment to David later.

Up top, Regina flopped over, her chest heaving. Emma’s mouth curled in a grin.

“Not exactly very Queenlike of you-” she was laughing, when suddenly a single shot rang out, and her whole body shuddered, her beautiful blue-gray eyes became unfocused and her mouth gaped in a silent cry of pain.

With a roar, Red sprang out from under the bed and barreled at the door.

“Emma!” Regina gasped in horror. She pressed a hand to the wound between Emma’s breasts, desperately trying to stop the bleeding as she gathered the bedsheets around them. They were defenseless.

“Emma, hold on. Red is taking care of Mr. Gold. Just hang on!” Regina said fervently.

“I’m fine. Just - take care of yourself - “ Emma wheezed. “Tell Mary Margaret - I liked acting married. I love you, Regina.”

The light slowly faded from Emma’s eyes as her life-blood soaked Regina’s hand.

“No - no - “ the former Evil Queen sobbed. “I can’t lose you too.”

But it was too late. She was gone.

Regina was alone.
