"Name five things you can hear."

"Birds chirping... the wind... leaves rustling... farm animals... and ocean waves."

"Good. Name four things you can smell."

"Grass... pine trees... animal manure... and Silver."

"Well done. Name three things you can taste."

"Berries... chicken... and salt."

"All right. Name two things you can touch."

"The grass under my feet... and the stick in my hands."

"Okay. Name one thing you can see."

A pause. "N-nothing... nothing b-but darkness."

"This was supposed to make you calmer. Fuck! I'm sorry, Gold, it's just--"

"It's okay. I know it's hard to remember I'm blind now. You don't have to apologize."

Crystal sighed. I imagined her crossing her arms across her chest angrily.

"I know," she said, the irritation in her voice clear. "I just can't believe you're blind now."

I heard Silver's footsteps, coming closer, approaching from my left. The scent of lavender and eucalyptus strengthened as he stopped close to me.

"I've been blind for six months," I said. "I'm used to it now."

"So am I," Silver added, speaking for the first time since he'd brought me here. "I've barely left his side since he went blind, as you well know."

Crystal and Silver had been helping me as much as they could. Of course, it was a matter of contention between them, with Silver angry at Crystal for not being there for me, and Crystal resenting Silver because I trusted him more than her.

"Shut... up," I said in a low, deadly tone. "Arguing won't get us anywhere."

I heard Crystal gulp nervously. Next to me, Silver's feet shuffled in the grass. I sincerely wished that I could see the looks on their faces at the tone of my voice. As it was, I could only imagine.

No matter what I said, I still wasn't quite used to being blind. Sometimes, I'd wake up and open my eyes, expecting to see my room, but only seeing pitch blackness instead. Then I'd remember what happened, and my situation would hit me like a ton of bricks.

The doctors had said I was lucky to be alive.

They'd said I was lucky to not have any brain damage, or any other serious injuries.

They'd said that my life would never be the same. I wouldn't be able to battle, to breed Pokemon, to do the things that I'd done when I'd had sight. They'd basically said that I'd never be able to really love again.

"Gold...? Gold, look out!"

I felt a powerful force, not Silver or Crystal, pulling me from behind. Gasping, I tried to run, but the force increased, lifting me off my feet and pulling me through the air. I heard a rush of air, then felt an intense cold, then everything faded as I blacked out.
