"Thanks for doing this for me, Scarlet Witch."
"It's no problem, Midnight." You murmured to your best friend. You had volunteered to take her spot as co-chaperone for Class 1-A's Quirk training camp trip. "Is there anything specific I should bring?"
"Nah, just the typical sleep-away camp stuff." She shrugged and took another sip from her almost empty water bottle. Patrol had been slow tonight. You and Midnight had practically spent the whole time chitchatting about lesson plans and hero news as you sat atop an apartment complex overlooking the city. It was around two in the morning when you were dozing off, and the sound of a crash jolted you awake.
"That's our cue." Midnight stood and jumped from the roof, landing perfectly on the ground below.
"Copy." You responded, flying down to the ground. You both ran toward the scene of the crash, a double car crash on the bridge over a highway, seeing that one of the cars had instantly exploded upon collision.
Before you could reach the crash scene, another crash echoed from further down the road. You both turned towards the sound. "Stay here, I'll head to that one." Midnight called, and before you could protest she was already running in the direction of the second crash.
You rushed to the driver side of the car on fire, using your magic to quell the flames away from the door. Unlocking it with a snap of your fingers, you yanked the door open and began pushing the smoke out. You felt around for any bodies, but all you could feel were the scorched seats.
Hoping that the occupants had escaped before the explosion, you ran the other car, removing the smoke and peering inside. Nothing.
You rounded back to the other car, peering inside now that the smoke had cleared completely. There was no sign of life inside, and you weren't even sure that real people had been driving these cars.
"Well, it seems that splitting you both up was easy." A deep voice purred from behind you. You turned swiftly, your magic alight in your hand. A villain, hiding his identity with a hoodie and by keeping his head down.
"Well, well." The villain said smoothly, keeping his face toward the ground, "If it isn't the No. 4 Pro Hero, the Scarlet Witch."
"Show yourself." You said loud enough for him to hear over the crackling flames.
The villain chuckled, "I'm not a pretty sight to look at," He tilted his head up, and his features were illuminated in the firelight, "But if you insist."
You held in your gasp, your scream. It was Dabi. Dabi, the villain you had only seen in police sketches and grainy security camera footage. Dabi, the villain you were hoping to never fight. Now, he stood before you. And all you could to was try to keep yourself composed- no, you had to keep yourself composed. You didn't work your way up to the fourth spot on the Japanese Hero Rankings for nothing.
"You know, it's been a long time since that friend of yours left." He smirked, evil and ego radiating from him. "Pray tell, what's happened to her?"
Nemuri. Oh God, Nemuri. Your breathing was heavy as you slowly decreased your magic, showing him your bare hands and raising them beside your head. You had no other choice. "Give her back. Please, I'll- I'll do anything."
Dabi only stared at you, at your right hand.
"I won't hurt you or your League of Villains," You continued, "Just- just please give Midnight back."
Dabi continued to stare at your hand as he reached for the hem of his shirt. You revved up your magic in the hand he wasn't staring at, preparing for him to draw a weapon. He grasped the hem of his shirt and ripped it right down the middle, revealing the scars and burns that lined his chest. He pulled his shirt from his left side, and a matching mark of a flame surrounded by magic rested over his heart, bordering his scars.
Your heart leapt into your throat as you watched him bring his hand up over his mark. No.
Dabi, now staring at you breathlessly, touched his finger to his ear. "Call it off. Call it off!"
You nearly jumped at how loud his voice echoed in the silence of the night. He looked into your eyes, flashing a sweet smile you could've never imagined on a face like his. "I'll be seeing you soon, soulmate."
He jumped down onto the street below the highway, and you stared at his retreating back until you snapped out of your shock.
Nemuri.
You began running in the direction Midnight had ran minutes before. After about a mile, you found her laying on the pavement next to a car crash similar to the one you were first at. She groaned, reaching for you as you approached her.
"Nemuri!" You cried, kneeling beside your friend.
"I'm fine, I'm fine," She coughed out, "What the hell happened?"
"It was Dabi and the League of Villains." You whispered, "He was going to fight me, but I think... something scared him off."
Nemuri held out her arm and she grunted as you helped her stand. "I's heard the villains who held me down say that someone had 'called it off'. I wonder what spooked the guy.
"I have no idea." You lied as you stared down at the mark on your hand, but the truth rung through your mind.
Soulmate.
