It was loud, it was blurry and it was busy.Katya is unconscious laid out on a gurney and barely breathing at the moment. The nurses are coming to take her into surgery soon and all Trixie can do is sit in that stiff scratchy seat that's leaned up against a wall in the hospital waiting room.
Jess is next to Trixie and has her arm wrapped over her shoulders and is squeezing her gently, meanwhile, Pearl and Violet had just left to go clean up at the tea house and head home after.
Trixie sat still and just stared blankly as a nurse approached the gurney and looked over Katya who was sleeping and shallowly breathing. She looked up at Trixie and Jess,
"are either of you family?"
Jess shook her head no and answered:
"No, her mother will be here soon though."
The nurse nodded and took the ends of the gurney and started to push Katya down the hall. Trixie sighed and looked down, finally relaxing somewhat.
Jess looked over and frowned,
"Hey..."
She rubbed Trixie's shoulder,
"She's gonna be okay - and at the end of it all you can tell her about the scholarships you earned!"
Trixie tried to force a smile and nodded, she looked at Jess and met her eyes, thinking about the fact she had at once felt the same way about Katya,
"So... you guys dated hey?"
Jess laughed awkwardly and rubbed the back of her neck.
"Sort of - we were young, teens - it was angsty and stupid and we ended things when she moved, I liked her but I can't say I loved her."
Trixie bit her lip and nodded,
"Ah...I see."
She looked back at Jess,
"I need to go to the washroom, I'll be right back."
Jess nodded and smiled warmly,
"Don't be too long - I'll miss you."
Trixie laughed slightly before walking out of the waiting room and down the hall towards the bathroom, she stopped as she walked past a familiar room: one she'd been in herself in the past with a concussion. Trixie stood there and swallowed hard.
So much had changed.
She turned and made her way to the bathroom, she chose the single occupancy one and shut the door quickly before standing over the sink and closing her eyes while trying to focus on her breathing and refusing to get sick from the anxiety that had been overwhelming her since that afternoon.
Trixie looked up at her reflection for a moment, looking over her features - Katya had done an immaculate job at those sketches of her, even down to the freckles on her cheeks and the singular freckle on her neck.
She smiled gently, Katya saw her - really saw her, before anyone else ever had. Katya saw Trixie for exactly who she was and there was no mask, or hiding or secrets - she knew the nitty gritty details and never once batted an eye.
Trixie sighed and shook her head to herself as she turned on the sink and splashed her face with some cold water from the tap. As she twisted the handles back and turned the water off she mumbled to herself:
"You have an amazing opportunity and amazing girlfriend, don't go ruining that now..."
Trixie dried off her hands and proceeded to exit the bathroom, as she stepped out she noticed a nurse run down the hall towards the room Katya had been brought into. Trixie slowly approached the room and peered around the door.
They'd started working on Katya but suddenly there was beeping and suddenly it was loud, it was blurry and it was busy - and someone else was yelling "Code Blue" while another nurse was yelling "grab the defibrillator!" And then there was Katya with a cold paste slathered all over her chest and two paddles being pressed to her chest while someone counted down and then I here was a sharp buzz and her body arched upwards slightly.
Trixie just stared for a moment, she didn't care about the tears that were slowly steaming down her cheeks and dripping from her chin now or the fact that her mascara was burning and her hair was dishevelled and falling in her face.
She watched as they attempted to resuscitate Katya one more time and before Trixie could stop herself she ran in crying:
"You can't let her die!"
A doctor had looked back at her and one of the nurses was running towards her in slow motion with a clipboard and notepad.
Trixie cried harder and fell her to her knees as the nurse wrapped an arm around Trixie's back,
"You can't let her die -I love her!"
She sobbed and stared up at the bed as they attempted once more.
