Chapter 4

The sun pierced through the opening in the window and the slow careless breeze rustled the trees. The party that had happened last night seemed like a faraway dream but the feel of it still lingered in the air. As mother began to awake the talk began and the distraught house was soon lively and the crisp morning air echoed with the voices.

I made my way outside and Jasmine came running to me holding my hand, and we went out to play in the wilderness. I and Jasmine carried on playing with burnt dolls, and broken marbles, suddenly, then we hear footsteps approaching us, as I looked up I smiled cheerfully and so did Jasmine. It was Ibrahim, I could tell that he was very well and looked much better.

“Ibrahim, my brother how are you?” I said nicely.

“I’m very well, Muhammad how is you and I came over to tell you that I’m so grateful for you and you saving me and I wanted to thank you, so thank you” Ibrahim said politely.

“That’s good indeed, and I’m coping Alhamdulillah and oh brother, but you are very welcome and I appreciate you coming here, come in for tea eh?” I said kindly.

“That’s good Muhammad, you stay well and no brother unfortunately I cannot I have to go soon” he answered.

“Oh okay well, Ibrahim you take care and take care of your family” I said until Jasmine interrupted me and didn’t let me finish.

“Brother, I’ve missed having you around” she smiled cheekily.

“Well, isn’t it my favourite little girl eh? Jasmine, habibiti how are you?” He said thoughtfully.

“I am well, big brother “she replied.

“Well, Salaam habibiti and you too Muhammad, take care”

“Salaam, brother” as me and Jasmine yelled out.

Mother heard us yell, salaam and then called us in asking who we were talking to “It was Ibrahim mother” I said and she smiled “Oh okay son”. Mother then told Jasmine to go doodle, whilst she talks to me, and Jasmine went off to colour in whilst I was standing still next to mother confused.

“Muhammad” she said, whilst showing me a wedding photograph.

“Yes mother, what’s this?” I replied back as I was confused.

“You see this photograph, you see this tall man, with black hair and hazel eyes that’s your fathers friend and I think he may be able to help us,  you to get food, and he can protect us” she said cheerfully.

“And mother what would you like me to do? “ I said, still confused.

“I need you to look for him sweetheart, and I think I may know a place he may be at” she said, as if she had this whole thing planned.

“But mother...” she interrupted me... “Son we will be fine, we will manage”

So I listened to everything she had to say, and I had to make my way tomorrow looking for this mysterious man.  The next morning, I made my way to find this man but first I said goodbye to mother and Jasmine but Jasmine wouldn’t let go of my hand, and she finally let me go and I made my way to find my dad’s best friend. So I went on this journey and I didn’t expect it to be like this.

Darkness, total darkness had already invaded the street. The cold wind and the chill it had brought with it were indescribable. But above all I could feel the fear which stalked the street. I have never been scared of the dark but things that I cannot see under this sky, this black veil threatened me, and tonight there was something more in the streets. Maybe it was the absence of small noises or the lack of light from the shops which normally infiltrated the streets. Tonight it was a different night because at this hour, I was alone. Totally alone in a street that I’m not really used to at night.

I finally found the spot just to have a sleep, but I knew it wouldn’t a peaceful sleep at all. It was in a house, but it had fallen apart, but it had a huge mattress and I could also see a cooker and there were cans of beans with bread. I cooked one can of beans and ate it with bread quickly, and put the rest of the 7 can of beans in my book bag and near the cooker I saw a blue bag so I walked towards it and took a look inside, and Alhamdulillah it was a miracle, a load of bread, so I decided to put that in my bag. I decided to wander around the house a bit and as I looked at the corner of the mattress I could see small bottles of water, there were 8 bottles and I took them an ‘all. I then sat on the ripped mattress, and dozed off.

I watched as the large glowing sphere rose slowly into the dull morning sky. Casting sunbeams in every direction while it illuminated the small town. I stared out the glass panes as the colours made by the rising sun changed, growing more vivid with the passing time. Making the sky more radiant as it climbed higher and higher into the sky. But as beautiful as the morning was I knew today would be horrible. I just had that sense that this day will be dreadful.

I made my way looking for my dad’s best friend, it had been about 5 hours and I just gave up, and I sat on this rock. The rock was rusty, old and it stank but I’d rather sit on the rock rather than sitting on the mud and I looked around this area and thinking how beautiful this area must’ve been but now look at it, all ruined and destroyed. However, I was exhausted so I decided to make my way back to the broken house I was staying at, so as I got off this rusty old rock I suddenly turned around because I felt like I heard something, or it was just me imagining things so I carried on walking until I heard a scream, more like a cry but I just couldn’t figure where it was coming from exactly. I started walking around, to find where this screaming was coming from, and I heard it again and this time I think I knew where it was coming from, from the sewer. I didn’t want to go in there but I had no choice.  I had to help this person because they may have been hurt and maybe crying out for help.

I made my way in to this wreck, knocked down sewer, even though I was already dreading it.
