Chapter 9
The yellow distinguished sun started expanding from the ground. It filled the sky with beautiful colours of red and flecked the clouds with unending rays of pink. It was bright and dazzling as it invited me to stare, deep into the horizon. The sunlight glazed through the window/curtains, I opened my eyes slowly. The sunlight shone on my face, my toes curled, my fingers twitched and my eyes blinked and I was awake.
I dragged my body, off the dirty, ripped mattress, and I stretched my hands out, yawning loudly "Oh sorry princess, I woke you" I said warmly, and Jasmine trying to open her eyes "No prince, I was awake, just hard to open my eyes in the mornings and prince Happy Birthday" she said whilst laughing and I laughed with her "Thank you Habibti". I picked her up and sat her on my stomach as she lay on me and fell back to sleep. I kissed her forehead and lay there for a couple minutes. At least 25 minutes went past; I lay there thinking 'that was fast'. I got up, dragging my feet forcefully to the sink to wash my face and my mouth. I wash my face and mouth and turn around to mother rubbing her eyes whilst trying to get the blanket off her. I helped mother up " Thank you habibi" she said whilst leaning in to kiss my cheek "Happy Birthday, sweetheart you're 19 now aren't you" she said cheerfully. I leaned in and kissed my mother on the forehead "Shokran mother and yes your son is 19 today" I said whilst giggling, then mother hit me lightly across the head whilst chuckling. It made me laugh even more, because I've never seen my mother this happy.
I and mother started getting breakfast ready; as mother was getting the food ready I lay a mat on the floor and placed the food there. I placed bread, a small bit of butter and tea, which was enough for all of us Alhamdulillah. I poured the tea for my princess Jasmine and for Ammu Hamza "Shokran son, and I hear it is your 19th birthday today "he said happily; I looked up at Uncle "Yes, Ammu it is my birthday to day" I said politely. He put his huge, muscly hands on my shoulder "Well, happy birthday son, Inshaa Allah it will be a memorable day" he said finely.
A couple of hours later, I find mother, Ammu Hamza and Jasmine; in the kitchen area whispering about something. I tried to secretly hear what they were whispering about but mother pushed me lightly "No Muhammad, you can't listen, but I do need you to go and fetch some more food for us darling" mother said sweetly and I stood there and chuckled "Thanks for the push mother, and I shall do as you say mother" I said suspiciously. She gave me a smile and I left the torn house to go and look for some more food.
Mothers POV
I think Muhammad knew what was going on but we had to get planning quickly. I and Hamza went to get the food ready, whilst Jasmine went outside to the neighbors and ask if they had any balloons. The neighbors had about 4 balloons. I sighed in relief.
It had been at least an hour now that Muhammad had gone and everything was nearly prepared. I look to see Jasmine making a card and a necklace for Muhammad and Uncle Hamza looking for the bracelet his father gave to him to give Muhammad. I however went to look for Muhammad's father's watch; as I promised his father that I will give it to Muhammad when he becomes older. I found the watch and wrapped it in clean foil and Hamza and Jasmine did the same with their presents. I went around the neighbors to tell them to come round in about half an hour. I just prayed that this will be a good day.
Muhammad's POV
I walked down the road, to find that a house was bombed but I saw that there seemed to be a lot of food there. I made my way in to the house and opened the kitchen cupboards to find a jar of sweets and chocolates, a milk carton, a water carton, 5 cans of beans, 1 whole packet of bread. I then opened the left cupboard to find some tea and kettles and pans. I decided to take as much as I could, "God please forgive me, for taking these things, but I need to feed my family". I said to myself, feeling guilty of taking these things.
As I walked down the road, I was wandering still what mother and Jasmine and Uncle were talking about but I brushed away the thought and carried on walking.
I carried on walking, and see an elderly man getting beaten up by the Israeli soldiers. I wished I could help but I quickly hid. I peeked through the bushes to see the Israeli soldiers gone and I rushed quickly to get to the old man and helped him up "Thank you son" he said innocently We talked for a couple minutes and I offered him food.
I made my way home.
(POV finished)
I was about 5 minutes away from home and from the distance I could see our neighbors going inside our house. I was getting even more suspicious. I walked inside our house to find all my neighbors standing there and mother, Jasmine and Uncle stood there too. I was completely shocked, in such a short amount of time they did this "Thank you, everyone especially my family, this means the world and I wished that father was here but he's in a better place" I said upsettingly. I rushed to give mother a hug "It's okay son" she said sweetly. I was given my presents one by one from some of my neighbors and from my family. I sobbed at the happiness I was feeling, and I absolutely loved my father's watch and the bracelet uncle gave me and the necklace that Jasmine made for me and her. The party had been on for a couple of hours. I thanked everyone before they left.
The day went by quickly but it was absolutely amazing. After the party had ended, we all had a meal together "I love you prince so much" Jasmine said whilst heading off to bed "I love you more princess" I said cheerfully. The meal was finished and we all went to bed.
It was one hell of a day but an amazing one.
