Rumi had nightmares. All night long, they woke several times drenched in sweat and with Shigaraki's laugh still echoing in their ears, or feeling Dabi's burned palms on their thighs, or small of the back, as he was carrying them to their hideout.
They tried their best to never ruin Todoroki and Midoriya's sleep, since they were now their roomates.
They were good, they tended to tiptoe around them though, probably out of mutual embarrassment. Not they weren't friends, but they were never close enough to be as "at ease" as Bakugo and Kirishima were.
They were keeping their eyes closed, trying to calm the nerves, when they heard someone waking up.
Todoroki was stretching a little, when Rumi focused on the shadow in the dark room. It was morning, the sun was already up and seeping through the roller shutter, but was still hard to grasp any detail.
- Mornin'.- his voice was lower than usual, if that was even possible. - You look a little frightened. Did you have a nightmare last night?-
- Yeah.- Rumi sighed. - I kept seeing those two villains, and...- words died in their mouth.
- Oh. I completely understand. You went through something incredibly scary yesterday, you must feel a little tense after everything that happened.-
- I guess I have...-
- Did you at least sleep ok?-
- I... no, I didn't. I kept waking up in a pool of my sweat.-
- I'm sorry to hear that.- Rumi asked to themselves if he was actually, since his face didn't change for a bit. But it was Todoroki, he usually didn't really show any emotions. - If I knew you had nightmares all night, I would've tried to stay awake with you. I know it helps, not being alone when you're scared.-
Rumi didn't answer. They couldn't gather enough strength to politely refuse the offer, so they kept quiet.
- We have today and tomorrow as roommates, so please don't esitate to wake me up if you feel like you can't sleep. Ok?-
They nodded, with a full intention of never doing that.
Midoriya yawned and woke up, before Todoroki could say anything else. His bed hair made Rumi smile. The curls were a mess, all flattened on the side where the head was resting on the pillow, and all ruffled on the other side.
- Mornin' you guys.-
- Morning.-
Izuku squinted. - You didn't sleep well.-
Todoroki shifted and sat on the edge of his bed. - They had some nightmares. The villain attack shook them up a little, I think.-
- I don't blame them.- then he planted his green eyes on them. - Are feeling ok?-
- I'm... alive.- whispered Rumi. - But mostly worried.-
- You're worried about Kacchan and Kirishima, right? Ehi, they're super tough guys, I know that they'll pull through before we'll even have the time to blink.-
- They promised they would be at the Gala, so...- Todoroki added, passing a hand through his hair and somehow not messing it up. - I don't think there is something to worry about. They are pretty resilient.-
- Exactly. It'll be ok.-
Rumi wasn't sure, but they had literally no strength to counterpoint the argument.
Midoriya kept looking at them, inquisitive. He seemed to pierce through their mind and heart. - Do you think you feel well rested enough today to go out? I know Mr. Aizawa is letting anyone leave the resort area, but there is still lots to do here. I'm sure we can find something fun.-
Rumi appreciated really the effort. They smiled at the two boys.
- Yeah, I could really use a distraction.-
- Oh, ok. Cool. We should grab some breakfast first, then.-
Todoroki stretched again. - Do you think they'll have soba today?-
- Oh, I am... uh... I'm not too sure about that, Todoroki. Maybe. We can check.- Izuku laughed. - I'm not sure this place will have it, but I'll hope for you.-
- Thank you, Midoriya. I'm going to go get dressed, be right back.-
- Ok, take your time.-
Rumi wasn't sure about their dynamic. It was a completely different friendship to what they were used to. It worked, but it was confusing. Maybe because Midoriya was shy and respectful, and Todoroki really had no social clue.
- Oh, so... Todoroki and I were planning to go to the beach today. Did you wanna come with us? I know that you still might be a little nervous about the beach and all, and I don't blame you...-
Rumi snorted. - As long as it's actually you this time...-
- Uh? Oh, I promise it is actually me this time. I wonder if there's a way I can prove it... I guess you just gonna have to trust me.-
- Believe me.- Rumi sighed smiling. - The fact that you wanna prove yourself it's enough of proof.-
Midoriya laughed lightly. - On a more serious note, I really hope you're feeling alright. I think a lot of us unfortunately know what is like to face a villain head-on like that, and it's really really scary. It's a situation I wouldn't wish on anyone. I heard you were super brave through it all, though.-
Shut up, I wasn't. Rumi wanted to tell him that, but they couldn't. Words were stuck in their throat.
- I'm so glad that Kacchan and Kirishima managed to find you, too.- he lowered his voice and started to torture his lower lip, as he usually did when he was thinking fast. - I wonder if the villains are still on the island, or did they leave. I hope they decided that it wasn't worth it and left for now. Because what if they just decided to attack the Gala... no, they'd never do something that risky... with all the Pro Heroes from all around the world that would be at the Gala, they would never risk something like that...-
Rumi had learned through the years to never stop Midoriya during his rumbles, since he was actually pretty smart and always bring up good points and ideas. They let him speak, and listened closely, while taking out some clothes from the luggage.
Todoroki emerged from the bathroom, and informed the other two that he was done changing. Midoriya didn't seem to notice, and kept going with his thoughts. Rumi nodded.
- Oh, Midoriya, I think you're muttering to yourself.-
- Uh? Oh! I'm so sorry.-
Rumi knew that was just a courtesy, he had learned that he could do that freely with his friends and classmates without being judged. Mostly, people just got used to it and ignored it for the most. Obviously not everyone, and sometimes he needed a shush. But the shame he once hold to it was gone.
- Man, sometimes I don't realise when I'm doing that...-
- That's all right.-
- Well, I'm gonna go get changed into my bathing suit, I'll be quick.-
There was a flicker of green light, and he was gone.
Damn, Rumi thought to themselves, he really is going to be quick if he uses his quirk.
- I like beach days.- started Todoroki. - Midoriya and I haven't got to see the beach yet, so I am looking forward to spend the day there.-
- It is really beautiful. I hope you'll like it.-
- Besides all the terrible things that happened yesterday, how did you find the beach?-
Rumi really wished they'd stop bring the incident up, mostly because they did feel really bad about it. It was almost funny how ultimately gay panic through the night had let their crushes to the hospital...
But, as said, Bakugou and Kirishima were at the hospital, and it was all their fault.
- I really liked it, the beach has a pretty pearly colour, and the water is so clear.- they force a smile.
- Oh, nice. I'm glad to hear that is very nice.-
Silence fell, as the two didn't know how to interact with each other again. It was not a bad thing, it's just they never clicked, so conversations never quite started between the two of them. So they both didn't know what to tell the other.
- We will stay where there's lots of other people, we won't straining off anywhere dangerous. I'm sure they left the island right now. It wouldn't be smart of them to stick around after what happened yesterday.-
Again with the incident. Please stop.
- I'm sure the authorities and the Pro Heroes are searching the island for them, I think we will be completely safe from here on out.-
Midoriya opened the door of the bathroom. Rumi thanked him in their mind for causing a distraction and ending that conversation. They weren't sure how to make Todoroki stop.
- Ok, all done. The bathroom is all yours if you'd like to change. We're going to stop and get some breakfast quickly before we head out to the beach, so if you'd like you can put your bathing suit under your clothes...-
Rumi stopped listening. It was rude of them, but to be fair they didn't really have the strength to keep going. They just nodded and hid in the bathroom.
They actually took their time. They splashed their face with cold water, they slowly put on the bathing suit that resembled too much the one they had on during the incident. They cursed themselves for their little habit of buying a stock of the thing they thought looked good on them. They had a lot of the same stuff, just in different colours. Like the suit, this one was blue and grey, but basically was the same model as the other.
When they came out al, changed, Midoriya directed them and Todoroki to the cafeteria to get breakfast.
Todoroki added that he really hope they had soba. His obsession really weirded Rumi out, but to each their own, and they never judged him for that. And he found the soba.
Izuku was astounded. - Wait, oh... well that's great, Todoroki...- he wasn't sure of what to say. The plate was small, and there was a little piece of paper near it.
- There is a little note here.- Midoriya noticed it too. - "I knew they wouldn't have soba, so I requested it for you." ... from Endeavour?!- his voice when up an octave in shock.
- I don't want soba anymore.-
Rumi snorted. - Then pick something else.- then they fussed over the buffet, moving to get some coffee. Their stomach had yet to settle, so maybe the safest option was not to eat.
Midoriya catches them. - Are you not eating?-
- Sorry, but I feel a little bit sick. If it's ok, I'm going to grab a hot tea and see if I can cure my nausea.-
They both looked worried. Izuku tried to like he wasn't, waved his hands in front of him and smiled. - Oh, ok. It's no problem. I brought some snacks for the beach today, so if you're feeling hungry later you can have them.-
Rumi moved away from the two. They sighed. Suddenly not even the tea was something they were at least ok getting. All they wanted to do was curl up in a ball and suffer. Every light blue hair they could see suddenly was becoming Shigaraki, and the smell of burned eggs from the chicken was sickening.
They ordered something, not really paying attention to what, and as soon as they got the mug they drank it. It was burning down their throat, they could feel the hotness in their stomach. It tasted like nothing.
They located Todoroki's hair in the corner of the big room, and marched there.
- Oh, are you not eating?-
- No.-
- Oh. Are you feeling well?-
Midoriya acted like it wasn't a big deal, and it wasn't really, but Rumi could sense his concern. - I think they're just not too hungry this morning. That's ok, though, they'll have some snacks later.- he looked at them. He was not asking, it was an order.
Jeez, I wonder why Katsuki can't put up with him. They have the same personality. Rumi fidgeted with their fingers.
Rumi wasn't listening anymore. They felt a light buzz in their ears.
- ...how are you liking the trip so far?-
- Mh?-
- I'm glad that, besides all the negative things that happened, you could have fun with Kacchan and Kirishima. Todoroki and I are having fun too. We met up with Uraraka, Iida and Asu... err... Tsu, yesterday at the pool.-
Rumi's brain could not focus. It appeared that the conversation was not worth the attention, and so they didn't manage to grab a single word. They felt sorry for their classmates who were trying so hard, but they just... couldn't do it.
Everyone got up.
Oh, we're going. Ok.
They got up too and followed the boys.
Midoriya kept trying to make them relax and enjoy the conversation, without success. He talked about how he was happy to actually enjoy the beach this time, and not having to use it as exercise field.
They found the spot to put their towel down, pretty much in the center of the beach. Around them, people were relaxing, unaware of the attack that happened. Children were playing, and Rumi without realising it started to look for the family they had seen the day before. They were not there.
- Are you going to relax here?-. Rumi was sure Izuku meant well, but he was getting exasperating. Couldn't he just go on with his day, for God's sake?!
- Sorry, I... I don't feel like...- it was becoming hard to even articulate a sentence. Their eyes started itching. What a mess they were.
- You don't feel like swimming? That's ok. I'll hang out with you here, if you want.-
- That's alright, I'll sit with you both too.-
Well, at least they'll talk to each other, Rumi thought.
- Are you sure, Todoroki? You can go for a swim if you want.-
- I'd rather spend time with you both today. So if you're relaxing here, I'd prefer to stay.-
- Aw, ok.- Midoriya smiled. - We should probably hurry and put some sunscreen on, then.- he passes the cream to them, and they completely shut off any sound while they concentrated on the movement they had to do.
It was almost frustrating how tired they were and how much energy every breath would take. They were not their usual self, and it was showing, and they hated it.
The other two were talking, Izuku probably was trying to comfort them. They weren't sure, to be honest.
Everything was like a noise in the background.
Except for... did Todoroki still have the "Hot'n'Cold" ringtone Uraraka set as a joke during first year?!
Rumi smirked to themselves.
Shoto looked at the phone, unbothered. - Oh, it's Kirishima.- and pressed the green icon to accept the call.
- Is that... Katy Perry?- Midoriya was perplexed, probably, as Rumi did, he thought Todoroki had changed it at some point during the years. But no, he didn't.
- Hello? Yeah, they're with me.-
Rumi tensed, suddenly hyper aware.
- Sure.- he passed the phone to them. - He wants to talk to you. I guess you left your phone in the room.-
Rumi basically snatched it out of his hand. - Kirishima!-
- Ehi Rumi! How are you holding up?-
A wave of relief flushed through their body. They started to shake a little.
- I'm with Midoriya and Todoroki...-
- Oh, I'm so glad you're having a nice day!-
They sniffed, trying to hold the tears back, and Kiri was most definitely gonna hear it.
- Aaw, don't get all emotional on me, or I'll start crying too. We wouldn't want that! Well, Bakugou wouldn't, at least. Speaking of Bakugou, we both miss you lots, Roomie!-
- Aah?- in the background Katsuki shouted. - I don't miss anyone!-
Kirishima laughed. - Don't mind him! Honestly, I think he's getting a little impatient, being all cooped up in this hospital room...-
That hurt. - Tell him to not kill the doctors.-
The redhead laughed again. - It's so nice to hear your voice again! I hope Todoroki and Midoriya are taking care of you well.-
- They are, don't worry.-
- That's great to hear. Are you at the beach right now? I can hear the waves in the background. Make sure to stay close to the resort, don't go anywhere alone, ok?-
- You're not their goddamn mother...- sputtered Bakugou.
- I know, I know. I just wanna look out for my friend, you know? Well, I'll let you go then.-
Please don't.
- I don't wanna hug too much of your time.-
Please, keep talking. I need to know you're fine.
- Go have fun, ok? Bakugou and I will see you again at the Gala.-
- At the Gala? Three other days?- they hope to not sound that much needy.
- The doctors said we will be totally fine to go by then. Maybe...- he esitated. - Maybe we could... uh... we could...-
- Oh, now you're getting all flustered about it?!- growled Katsuki. - You wouldn't shut the hell up about it earlier!-
- What?-
- Bakugou!-
- Just say it, idiot!-
- I was... just gonna say...- he was esitating again. He was nervous about something, Rumi could tell that much. - Maybe we could dance together. If that's, you know, something you'd be ok with...-
The f... WHAT?! Did he just...? Oh. Oh. Kirishima wanted to dance with them. Ok. Yeah, cool. Their cheeks were suddenly burning. Fine, yeah, ok. Sure.
He wants to dance with me. Is this real life or what?
- I... sure.-
- Ah, anyways, sorry to spring that on you out of nowhere.- he didn't hear they were ok with it. He was kind of panicking, trying to end things quickly, as he usually did when things didn't go how he planned. - We'll talk more later, ok? Take care for now, Rumi. See you soon. Bye! Bakugou, say...-
- Aaah, freaking... Bye.-
Call ended.
Rumi felt like their body was floating. They were fine, and Kirishima wanted a dance.
They passed the phone again to Todoroki.
- Oh, thanks for my phone.-
- Thank you.-
Midoriya patted the space next to him. - How are they doing? I hope they're fine.-
- Doctors say they'll be out for the Gala.-
- Oh, I'm so glad. It's good to hear about the Gala, too. I'm happy that everything is going to work out just fine!-
Rumi nodded and Shoto agreed.
- Oh, ehi, Todoroki and I are going shopping at the little shrimp mall on the resort. Would you wanna tag along? Maybe we could get some nice little "get well soon" gifts for Kacchan and Kirishima.-
- If I get a good night sleep, sure!- Rumi was fine, now, but they still felt like a train had run them over. They needed a bed ASAP.
- Great! It'll be lots of fun!-
- I wonder if they'll have soba there.-
- Uh...- Izuku laughed hard. - Maybe, Todoroki. Maybe.-
Rumi laughed too.https://youtu.be/85MFW2nRavw
