Dearest Harry,
Is everything alright? You haven't messaged me in a month, I couldn't find a way to get a letter to you, or I would have. I hope you are doing okay, I understand about Christmas, I'll go ahead and send your gift. I miss you a lot, I hope school is okay. See you this summer.

Lily folded up her letter with tears in her eyes and handed it to Hedwig. Hedwig left through the window and flew back to Hogwarts at top speed.

Hedwig flew all night and reached Harry in the Gryffindor common room, she pecked on the window until Harry let her in he pets her and fed her treats. Harry grabbed his letter and went to his dorm, pulling a shoebox out from under his bed. Opening the box he put the unopened letter inside with all of Lily's opened and unopened letters. He sent Hedwig back, no letter at all.

When Lily realized Hedwig was back she got excited until she noticed there was no letter, her heartfelt as though it shattered into a million pieces. She knew this meant that Harry wasn't busy, he did not care enough to send a response so there was no reason for her to write a letter until Hedwig needed to return. Lily spent Christmas with her family while Harry spent his time surrounded by friends. When Lily opened her gift from Harry, she was ecstatic to see a high-level potions book. When Harry opened his present he was shocked to see a stack of pictures of his parents, Lily and Harry growing up, all the way to a photograph of them right before he left for Hogwarts. Harry was filled with guilt for ignoring her and told himself he would try harder. When it got late, Harry and Ron went upstairs for bed Harry, did not notice Scabbers, Ron's rat, on his bed, Scabbers knocked the stack of photos off of Harry's bed between the headboard and the wall. Ron gets Scabbers, scolding him, and they all go to sleep. Full of hope that the rest of the year would be great.
