• From the very beginning Daryl knew you were an animal lover.
• Probably from all the countless times you talked about them during runs, or getting after him for scaring off hungry dogs.
• Being in an apocalypse was hard, partly in the sense that you wanted to keep all these animals you found along the way, but couldn't, because there was no way to protect them all.
• But to make up for it, Daryl would let you tend to his horse. You were able to brush her and feed her, and on some occasions, even ride her.
• You found yourself spending a lot of time with her when you weren't off helping the group. It was a peaceful place that allowed you to temporarily forget the circumstances that you were in.
• One day while doing some gardening, Daryl approached you. "Meet me at the stables in five minutes" was all he said before disappearing.
• You watched him leave for a second, slightly confused, and wondered what he could possibly be up to.
• You finished up what you were doing and headed towards the stables. When you got there, Daryl was nowhere to be found.
• "Daryl?" You called out to him. "Over here." He called back. You rounded the corner and found him standing with a beautiful black horse.
• You approached slowly to not startle him, a smile gracing your face.
• "Where did you get him?"
"I traded a few things. They weren't doin' nothin' with him so I figured you'd have more use of him."
• Your head turned quickly to stare at him. "I'd have more use of him?"
• Daryl nodded. "He's yers."
• wHaT????
• "You got me a horse?" You smiled, eyebrows raised in surprise. Daryl wasn't really the type to make big gestures like this, it was always small things that could almost go unnoticed. It was his way of showing that he cared.
• "I thought you could use one so you'd stop stealing mine." A hint of a smile appeared at the corner of his mouth, which caused you to let out a little chuckle.
• "Well, thank you. This means a lot to me."
• You wanted to hug him, but instead just placed your hand in his shoulder. He gave a light nod and brought his gaze back to the horse.
• You both stood there in silence for a moment petting your new friend. You held a lot of respect and admiration for Daryl, but this moment made you respect and admire him so much more.
