A little while later, after Paul dropped Alison off home, he returned to his own cottage, suddenly finding he had a lot to ponder over after listening to Alison's story in the pub about her mother.
It had started him thinking about his own relationship with his parents, which was not the greatest at the moment. In fact in some ways it uncannily reflected Alison's mother's estrangement with her parents, and it had hit a raw nerve. Especially where his father was concerned.
They had barely spoken to each other in the last few years
Things had always been volatile between them since Paul had hit puberty.
They were too much alike in some ways, and that was what made them clash. Both of them sharing the same egotistical temperament, that made it hard for them to admit when they were in wrong.
Despite this, Paul had a certain respect for his father. He had taught him everything he knew, that had made him such a good chef, he grudgingly admitted he owed him that much..
But Paul had not wanted to live under his fathers shadow, He had wanted to make a name for himself, and the first taste of this, he experience when he was eighteen whilst working for his father.
It was at this time a television company had taken an interest in Enzio Maratti's restaurant where the rich and famous liked to dine, They wanted to do a fly on the wall documentary, lasting over a period of three weeks, where they would be watching behind the scenes in the kitchen. and the restaurant.
Although the documentary focused primary on Enzio, his son Paul also started getting attention, especially from the younger and older female viewers who happen to tune in.
So in that small space of time, Paul had become a minor celebrity himself, and he had loved every moment of it.
He decided he enjoyed it so much, that he wanted further attention in the public eye.
It had been the start in his pursuit of fame, and something his father had disapproved of.
Enzio had not been happy that his son Paul seemed more concerned with being in the limelight, and catching the attention of the paparazzi camera's, for his womanising and staggering out of nightclubs with other so called celebrities, and living the so called 'high life', rather than actually concentrating on his skills that his father had passed onto him and building his reputation for being a good Chef
But at the time Paul had just thought his father was jealous and resentful, that he, his eldest son was now making a name for himself and becoming better known, and more popular than him.
Looking back on it now, Paul could see how immature this had all been.
When his father had tried to warn him of the folly of getting carried away and living a celebrity lifestyle, he had dismissed it, thinking his father didn't understand and was just being old fashioned.
So Paul, being stubborn ,had just went ahead and done the complete opposite of what his father advised him to do;. which had led to the clashes where they ended up barely speaking with each other.
He had not approved when Paul had wanted to marry Holly Chambers, a young blonde soap star, who was as ambitious and fame hungry as Paul, knowing that one of the reasons they got involved and then agreed to marry each other, was to get a lot media interest
That was when the really big rift in their relationship began to show; Especially when Paul's father had refused to attend the wedding.
Enzio became aware that the whole thing was more of a publicity stunt, than to do with actually being in love. And the young couple were getting a huge fee for selling rights to the pictures and story of their wedding, to a well known celebrity magazine
