Chapter 3

Sometimes things change you forever

Fucking zombie." I said as I leaned back on the car behind me feeling exhausted. I have never ran that fast in my life.

Taiyan kept looking at me with his head tilt to one side, lips thinned, nostrils flared and eyebrows scrunched. Is he mad at me? What did I do?
"What?" I stood up straighter.
"Zombie. You did not just say that?"
"Yes. It was a zombie. Trust me."
"Aera!" He began rubbing his forehead and his voice had that low scary rumble to it that I love.
"I am not joking. Believe me."
He began walking away.
"Where are you going? "
"Find our car."
"Why don't you believe me? If I am lying why would all those other people would run?"
Taiyan stopped mid way and my face collided with his back. I stumbled back.
"They were probably running after you." Taiyan turned around.
"No! Look I turned the corner and I was waiting for you to catch up to me. Then this guy comes up to me and he was soaking wet. He asked me for a selfie."

Taiyan glanced at my moving hands before he began walking away. I grabbed the collar of his coat to stop him.
"No! Listen to me!" I was practically on my tip toes to make him look at me in the eyes to realize how serious I was.

Thank god he stayed still or else I would've tumbled over.
"I took a selfie with him and he thanked me. But I noticed the white of his eyes going red. I asked him if he was okay but he suddenly started breaking all joints of his body and making weird sounds. Someone yelled at me to get away so I ran. He was running after me but then he was going after anyone. I saw him bite a woman."
"It could be a mental patient."
"How would that explain the protruding gross veins and leaking saliva and red eyes? It was a zombie. I am sure he will turn more, we need to get out of here."

Taiyan didn't believe me at all. He kept shaking his head before he pulled my hands away from his black coat.
"You still don't believe me?"
"No. But I agree we need to get out of here."
"Taiyaaaannnn!" I begged him with my eyes but he walked away. Taking his phone out and talking to the driver, I suppose.

I was sulking and glaring daggers at him as we waited for the driver to get us.
I took out my phone so I could search for evidence to show him but my phone was dead.

"Let's go." I followed after him quietly. We spotted our car and the driver standing beside it and smoking. He was soaking wet from the rain, I guess. He threw his cigarette as soon as he saw us and walked towards us.

"I looked for you everywhere. It's pure chaos out there."
"What is going on?" Taiyan asked.
"I have no idea. Everyone is running around and it's raining so much, barely anything is visible."
"It's zombies." I butted in again and they both stared at me. "Trust me. My phone is dead. But give me yours. I'm sure I can find something on the internet."
"You can always find something on the internet. It's filled with idiots." Taiyan said.
"Ughhh!" I stomped my foot getting agitated.
"Just take us to the airport. I don't wanna miss the flight." He said to the driver.

The driver nodded a second before his eyes widened. He fell on his knees in the next second and started cracking all his joints and his eyes went red, as the veins popped out of his face and hands.

"Wha- are you okay? What's wrong with him?"
"He is turning. "
"What?"
"He is turning into a fucking zombie. Can't you see?!" I yelled.
He looked back and forth between me and the driver who was now standing up.
"What.the.fuck?" Taiyan gulped.
"Let's get out of here." I began pulling his coat to get us away but he didn't budge.
"Hey man? You okay?" He asked the driver who just took a step towards us.
"Are you crazy? He is not okay. Let's get out of here." I was screaming in vain because Taiyan couldn't believe his own eyes.
"Taiyan!" I yelled so loud and the driver blinked once. He was completely gone. The zombie in front of us growled and charged towards us. Thankfully we both moved at the right time.

"Oh my god!" I shrieked just as Taiyan took my wrist and we dashed away. The zombie came after us. The lights of the parking lot was blinking with every step we took and the sound of the rain falling just made me feel like I was in a horror movie. Is this a dream? Wake up Aera. Wake up now!

We turned twice until Taiyan pulled me behind a car in the corner. We crouched down and he covered my mouth with his hand. He put the index finger of his other hand on his mouth gesturing me to not make any sounds. His eyes were wild and he was sweating. I've never seen him like that.

He removed his hand and looked around both of us breathing heavily. He took out his phone and began typing something on it.

He showed me the screen.
'We can't go out in the rain.'
I nodded. He typed some more.
'We need a car to get out of this city. And the driver has the keys.'
My eyes widened the second I saw the text. I snatched his phone and began typing.
'You are not thinking what I think you are thinking!'
He shrug his left shoulder.
'There is no other option. Don't be scared. Just stay here. I will get the keys.'
I began shaking my head frantically.
"No!" I whispered.
Taiyan grabbed my shoulder and nodded.
"I will come back." He whispered back.
"No!" He began to stand up but I grabbed his collar again and pulled him back down.
"You are not going. We will find a car somewhere."
Taiyan gazed at me and sighed, not the one he does when he is frustrated but the one I saw a few times on our ship pages on social media. In the videos he looks at me like that when I am not paying attention to him.
His adams apple bobbed. "I'll come back. Trust me."
"No! No!" I held on to his coat but he was stronger than me. He took my hands off him and stood up. Before I could pull him back down he was already running away.
I too stood up ready to follow him but the moment I heard the horrible noise coming from the Zombie my legs refused to move. I stayed behind the car only peeking out to see if he was coming back.

Five minutes later both of them made an appearance. Taiyan had a long pipe in his hand and he was hiding behind a piller. My heart was beating out of my chest as the zombie came closer to Taiyan.
"God please. Help him." I'm an atheist but desperate people find faith and all that.

The moment the zombie came close enough Taiyan swung the pipe hitting him right in the head. The zombie fell on his back as Taiyan kept hitting him. I couldn't watch it so I closed my eyes but the sounds were enough to make me wanna puke.

When it quiet down I finally opened my eyes. Taiyan waved the car keys at me.
"Fuck me." I muttered before running and throwing myself in his arms. He caught me with an "oof" and held me tight.

"I'm fine." He said caressing the back of head. I opened my eyes-
"Oh My Fucking God!" I should not have opened my eyes. My eyes fell on the mess on the floor. That was a brain lying there.
I released Taiyan and stumbled back. I couldn't take my eyes off the broken face of the zombie. Was that it's eyeballs?

I put a hand on my chest, suddenly, having the urge to throw up.
Taiyan must have noticed my eyes. He quickly covered them with his hands.
"Don't look at it. I should've warned you."
I removed his hand.
"That's so disgusting. I can't stop looking at it."
"I know." His eyes looked amused as he took my elbow to lead me away. As much as I hated the sight I kept looking at it over my shoulder while Taiyan kept turning my head back.

"Stop looking at it."

"I'm never gonna be the same."
