All three sisters closed their eyes as they gripped onto each other’s hands tight and were taken to a time their youth had still been untainted by boy’s love. They attempted to calm their minds and hearts, as the music in their minds played “Clair De Lune…”
Dede and the three sisters- Suzy and Grace at age fifteen and Caroline, at age sixteen, sat on a picnic blanket, on a glorious grassy mountain top. The light shined through the many daisies and dandelion’s they sat amongst. The ripe fruit of the dandelion’s flew through the sky, like tiny floating parachutes. Dede showed her girls a picture of her wedding dress.
Caroline smiled, “It’s beautiful.”
“This was your grandmothers. And when I die, Caroline, you will be next,” Dede said.
“Next for what?” Caroline asked.
“You are a princess, and you need a prince,” Dede said.
All three girls laughed.
Dede looked stern and explained, “this is not a laughing matter. The man you marry, must be able to take you seriously when you say it to him, for the first time.”
“This is unreal,” Caroline said, still having trouble believing it.
“So, does that make you a queen?” Grace asked Dede.
“Technically yes, but I hold tightly to the fact that your grandmother is still the queen, and I would like to keep that reign for her and her alone,” Dede explained.
“Well don’t we have to actually date first, to find our prince?” Suzy asked.
“You mean find me a prince,” Caroline corrected Suzy. Suzy rolled her eyes.
Dede explained, “Caroline, when you are eighteen you are allowed to date, and when you are eighteen, I trust you will be ready to take on this harsh burden. You should all learn from Caroline’s mistake in letting Thomas so close to her. Caroline got lucky. Thomas went to jail. If he hadn’t, he would probably be below her window with a pebble right now.”
“Would he follow her to Kansas?” Grace asked.
“Yes,” Dede replied.
“To Timbuktu,” Grace asked.
“Yes.”
“To her wedding day?” Suzy asked.
“Yep.”
“Off a cliff?” Suzy asked.
Caroline whined, “Suzy.”
“Yes,” Dede replied, looking at Suzy with a serious face.
“Oh my god,” Caroline said, swallowing deep and overwhelmed.
Dede then explained, “It’s rare to find the heart that yearns for a girl’s true love under the age of eighteen and any lust in the eyes of a fourteen-year-old boy, was not like that of a boy older. Thomas however was the exception… but I don’t want you girls to ever give up on finding love. Only when you turn eighteen, can I let you face the tainted love that may find you… but when you finally feel you are at a moment in life where things are changing for the better. The moment you feel most beautiful, most strong and content, please wear this dress together.”
“We can’t all wear it,” Suzy said.
Dede pointed to the dress in the photo and explained, “there’s three parts, including the dress and its layers.” Dede pointed to the photo and said, “this part can be worn on the top and this part can be worn for the waist.”
