Hip-hop artist and CEO of Empire Entertainment, Lucious Lyon, has always ruled unchallenged, but a medical diagnosis predicts he'll be incapacitated in three years, which alarms the family. Well, almost the whole family.

Without further damaging his family, Lucious must decide which of his four kids will take over when he's gone. Lucious' favorite son Hakeem is a gifted musician, but values fame over hard work. His' middle son Jamal is talented and shy, but gay—an embarrassment to the Lyon name. The oldest, Andre, is business-minded but lacks charisma. And the reappearance of Cookie, Lucious' ex-wife, also complicates things. She says that Lucious owes her for taking the fall for the drug-running that financed his early career.

Then there's Royalty, or Ro, as people like to call her. She's the only daughter in the Lyon family, and just so happens to be the last addition to the family. Royalty's talented like her two brothers before her, but Royalty doesn't care about the spotlight like they do.
