Alex sat on the bench outside of Mr. Diez' office, waiting for Debby to come out of her misery of scolding. Debby was quite too stubborn to control. This scolding happened more often and Alex would have to wait outside for Debby to step out so that he can plead on her behave. The last time, Debby got into trouble for engaging in graffiti.
"What could it have been this time," thought Alex.
When Debby came out and sat by him on the bench, he dashed straight into Mr. Diez's office. He had to do the usual ordeal; to intervene for Debby.
Alex stood motionless in front of Mr. Diez for about a minute, with Mr. Diez looking into his face with a disgusted look on his face.
" I plead on the behalf of Debby. I promise you she would stop graffiti," Alex said quite convincingly but it wasn't convincing at all to Mr. Diez.
Mr. Diez stood up and placed his arm on his chair with his other arm on his waist.
" Oh, no," he said solemnly whilst shaking his head slowly with an angry smile. " She didn't come in because of any graffiti. Her caretaker reported that she ran the car over her driver because I instructed him not to let her go anywhere. What do you, young man have to say about that?"
" I am so sorry for her behavior I will make sure she apologizes to the driver and to you of course."
They stared at each other for a long time and Mr. Diez kept on murmuring what Alex told him.
" I am sorry eh, eh? Do you know how difficult it is to raise Debby, she is a big pain in the ass. Always breaking rules and talking back at authority. I will have to do something permanent about this, but for the meantime, she can have it her way."
" Thank you so much Mr. Diez."
Alex went out and by seeing him , Debby sprang up joyfully and hugged him but he didn't return the hug. She stood in front of him with a sad face.
"Why?"
" Why what?"
"Why didn't you return my hug? It is just to thank you for getting me out of trouble."
"Well, I wouldn't be doing this often if you tried your possible best to get out of trouble. Why try to kill someone's child?"
They walked across the office parlore talking , arguing and arguing. Just as they were about to exit the office block, Debby pushed Alex against the wall , placed her hands on the wall, blocking him from moving. She said right into his face.
" Love me or hate me. I am who I am."
Alex looked deep into the blue ocean in Debby's eyes and admired her mild freckled face. How he wished Debby would love him the way he did. Anyone who saw Alex and Debby together would think that they are a couple. Unfortunately they weren't and that is exactly how Debby had in her mind; friends and that's all.
They grew up together because, Debby's dad worked tirelessly for Andrea, Alex's mum. Debby and Alex played together, went to the same school and did after school activities together. Debby was even Alex's first kiss but it was nothing else but a kiss. Alex never stood a chance of being her boyfriend ten years ago even when they were seven years old so what would get his hopes up, especially when she is dating a jock at school, Drew. Speaking of the devil, Drew drove in the driveway and horned to get Debby's attention. They were going to a football game. Debby upon seeing her ride, kissed Alex goodbye by giving him a peck on the cheek. Alex waved at her when she was far from sight. Alex acknowledged the fact that he was having mixed feelings. He just got kissed by the girl of his dreams and that same girl has been taking away by a gobshite. Drew, even though he was an athlete was a complete idiot. His brain was as good as dead. His coach always found it a tough job at making sure he got good grades in order for him to play for the school team. That is the price he had to pay for a good athlete like Drew.
Alex walked into his aunt Vicky's office after a validated signal that Debby wasn't interested in him and sat on one of the coquelicot couches in the office. Vicky's office was comfy and had everyone at home. She had her glass desk in front of the glass window which gave her a bird's eye view of New York's finest heights. She had a white wooden shelf that had many books on the two middle parts of the shelf and had pottered ornaments and crafts from famous artists like George Koons on the bottom and top parts. She had a colbat blue carpet on the floor and a turquoise curtain she usually drew to get the relaxing view she wanted. Vicky, unlike other office workers, never put a picture of herself or her family on the desk. But rather, she had her HP computer , her telephone , her stationary container and a bouquet of azalea flowers on her desk. Vicky took over the legitimate business of her sister, after she was diagnosed of schizophrenia. She started talking to imaginary people and by a week , it was certified that she had a whole banana plantation in her head. Alex was then thirteen years old but he handled it quite maturely . Even though at times he felt sad and pity for his mother , he was over the fact that she was literally a mad woman. An asylum was highly recommended for his mother but he refused for his mother to be taken to a mad house.
" How you doing Aunt V?"
" Emm, I'm good."
Vicky was spotted in a black fitting dress and in a stiletto heel which complimented her petite but curvaceous stature . She wore a blonde spiky hair and a snowflaked earring. She stood in front of the glass window that gave her the satisfying view she wanted with her hands at her back.
"Aunt V can I ask you something?"
"Sure, why not?"
" Well it's pretty hard for me to imagine you at my age being crazy and teenagerly but were you ever in love at my age?"
" Well, you might find it hard to believe but I was crazier than that your bestie, Darcy..."
"Debby."
" Yes, Debby. I was crazier than her and as a matter of fact, I was so in love that I lost focus of my life."
" So can I ask you something?"
"Sure"
"How do you cope when the person you love doesn't love you back? "
"Oh, I see where this is coming from", she said as she turned and faced Alex.
"Are you talking about Darcy, emm sorry Debby?"
"Yeah. She is love with this idiot at school but how can I get her to love me?"
"First of all, don't force it. Let her realize your importance and let her come crawling to you."
"Meaning I should wait for her?"
"As long as it takes , as far as you love her."
"Thanks but can I ask you one more thing?
How was it like when you broke your virginity?"
Immediately Vicky heard Alex's question, she bursted into laughter and she laughed and laughed until her ribs were hurting.
"Sorry Alex. Why are you asking this? Haven't you had yours yet?
"Nope"
"For a seventeen year old not to have broken his virginity yet it is really menacing. Of course, the experience for girls differs from that of boys. But you take your time and make sure you do it with the right person."
After saying this to Alex, Vicky wished someone told her this when she was like him. If someone did, her story would have been different.
"Thanks Aunt V."
Just then, Jason, the assistant head of marketing came in.
"Ok Aunt V, I will get going" , Alex said as he picked his bagpack which he left in her office earlier and went out to the office's game station.
