Maya's birthday was always the same, she climbed up Riley's window, they went out and explore the city, went for a cheap breakfast, it would normally be Savory's, they'd go to Matthew's apartment, they'd cut cake, she'd go home, her mom would bring her a tuna melt from the diner she worked in, she liked the tradition nothing ever changed, not once.

Now to see Riley with a big box in her hands, her birthday present, ready to be opened "Happy fourteen Maya" Riley smiled as her best friend took the big, decorated box out of her hands.

She opened it exited to see what was her present to be met with anther decorated box again, again, again, again and again.

"how's 14? tell me what it's like to be fourteen, but don't leave anything out" Riley smiled as she saw her best friend open her gift.

"So far it's a lot of work" Maya complained as she took another box, "Because you know I'll be there soon, and I want to know what I have look forward to" Riley explained with a smile.

Maya sighed "well if you're like me, you can look forward to your mother forgetting your birthday" Maya smiled, she was used to it, she shouldn't find it normal, and as much as it saddened her there was nothing, she could do about it.

Riley frowned "oh, no she did not!" she turned around thinking she was going to make it out of the window, she wasn't.

Maya took her by the belt stopping her from going "what are you doing honey?"

"Must talk to your mom" Riley yelped in reply

"Must not get involved" Maya retorted with a demanding tone

"Why do you tell me thins things if you don't expect me to fix them?" Riley questioned

"When your fourteen, you'll understand" Maya shrugged

"How could your mother forget your birthday, Maya?" she didn't

"I stopped trying to figure it out?" she shrugged "she was already gone when I woke up this morning, she probably she just took an early shift at the diner"

Riley shook her head "rather than be there for your birthday? nun-uh!" she tried to the same thing only to be stopped once again

Maya looked at the gift and smiled "Riles, a friendship ring"

"yeah" she was struggling to get out of Maya's grip

"Two of them" she eyed the whole ring

"Yeah!" she was still trying

"In case I lose one" she answered finally making

Riley finally sat in defeat "no" she answered with a huff

"Well, anybody else would have just gotten me one" Maya replied

"no" Riley repeated with the same tone as before

"Oh, I get it"

"yes"

"One for each hand" Maya retorted

"no" she repeated

Maya looked at Riley pointedly "I'll never take this of till I die"

"you'll probably die before me since your older" she said it calmly "should I tell the people not to take it off your dead corpse body?" Riley smiled

"Yeah, would you do that for me?" she nodded

"Maya and the other ring—" she started

"Is for you" she smiled at her best friend as she put it on
