- You said you were going to take a few days off to join me. You promised!

- I know what I said Carina, but my work is important, and I can't abandon it for anything.

- Anything? Are you serious Maya? We've been planning it for months.

- I know and I'm sorry but my position as captain is at risk and my job...

- It's important, it's pretty clear to me Maya. Your job is much more important than our plans.

- Carina! You know it's not like that!

An uncomfortable silence surrounded the room, Maya stared at Carina, while she avoided looking the blonde in the eyes, because if she did she feared she wouldn't be able to hold back the tears that were dying to come out.

- Carina, please look at me. The blonde begged, taking the Italian's hand.

- I'm going to sleep, I leave early tomorrow morning and I want to be well rested. Said Carina, releasing her hand from the blonde's grip. – I'm going to sleep in the guest room. She added, avoiding the blonde's gaze.

- Carina... The blonde tried to stop her, but Carina entered the room and slammed the door shut. – ... I love you. Maya added but it was too late, Carina didn't hear her.

The next day Carina woke up with a severe headache, she walked to the kitchen in search of a cup of coffee and realized that Maya was not at home, which increased her headache even more. As she headed to the dining room, she noticed a small envelope on the table. "I had to leave, duty calls. I'm so sorry. Ps. Don't open it until after the ceremony."

Carina rolled her eyes after reading what was written on the envelope. She was really proud of Maya, her position as captain and the hard work she did day in and day out, but lately everything revolved around her job. She was coming home very late and leaving first thing in the morning, so Carina had barely seen his wife for a couple of hours in the last few months.

She finished her cup of coffee in hopes of soothing the stupid headache. She felt exhausted, but she had to leave if she wanted to make it to the ceremony on time. After placing her suitcase in the trunk of the car, she took the small envelope and placed it in her purse on the passenger seat. Hours later Carina was on her way to her destination, the fight with Maya kept replaying in her head over and over again, so she decided to play some music in order to distract herself. But unfortunately, the plan didn't work, the music only made her headache worse and no matter how hard she tried she couldn't help thinking about Maya.

Five months ago, Carina had been informed that she had won a medical innovation contest. Carina was very excited to hear the news, she had invested years of her life in her research. She had worked very hard to achieve what she had accomplished and was very proud to see that her efforts were paying off. All the past winners of the award were renowned, important and world-renowned doctors. So, the event would be full of important people in the world of medicine. When Maya heard the news, she radiated happiness and pride, looking forward to seeing Carina on the podium, receiving the recognition she deserved and the applause from the audience. That day Maya promised Carina that she would be in the front row to celebrate with her and that she would clap louder than everyone in that room.

The car ride to the ceremony site was quite long, so the girls had decided that they would ask for a few days off, book a hotel room and take a little vacation, just the two of them, celebrating the Italian's achievement. They had been planning for months the places they would visit and how much fun they would have together. Carina smiled at the memory, but it soon faded as she recalled the events of the night before. Maya had promised to accompany her, had promised to be there, and celebrate with her. Carina didn't want to seem selfish; she knew how important the job was to Maya and the importance of her profession in society. Maya was a hero, she literally risked her life every day to save others and Carina would never try to take her away from her passion. But she couldn't help but feel sadness and disappointment that Maya had broken her promise. Without realizing it tears were streaming down her cheeks, she tried to quickly remove them, but her mind was too foggy, a wave of sadness, anger and disappointment was consuming her little by little until suddenly she heard the tires of a car screeching and in less than a second her car was spinning down the road.
