They used to say Earth was the best planet there was to ever exist. Most days I questions if that's true anymore. Only 8 countries are left. The ones that made up great continents are long gone. How? No one knows. All that we have been told is that we must follow the one thing that is keeping us alive. The Synthreous System.
"Opaline Hallowing! Get down here this instant!" My mother yelled from downstairs. I rushed to her, knowing that nothing good came out of making her wait. "Look at this horrendous mess!" she snapped, pointing at the spilled cup of water located on the floor. I stared at her for a split second before silently cleaning up the supposed mess.
My mother was sorted as a Medic, a job she took extremely seriously. She would always say, if it isn't spotless, it isn't acknowledged. My father died when I was 7, it hadn't affected my mother in any way. She had just waved it off saying that he was another worker of the system. With that, she had labelled him as 'Easily Replaceable'.
"Hurry up! Chop, chop! I am not here to wait for you to enjoy every second of life. Keep acting like this and you'll never be a good Medic!" Mother said it as if I had already been sorted.
Each year, all children that were 15 years old would be taken by one guardian to a humongous gathering, called the Summoning, in the Great Hall. All 17 Councillors would be there, at least that's how many I think there were, it changes each year depending on how many Councillors-in-training are selected.
"Opaline! Don't walk away from me! We still need to find you a nice suit for the Summoning!" She snapped, grabbing me by the arm and dragging me out of the house, towards our home basket. It was something that was linked to every house, another dumb rule of the system. The only way of getting anywhere was through the baskets. Our physical energy isn't strong enough for long-distance walking. Running is unimaginable, only something achievable by the Errors. As soon as we entered our basket, HollyWaters79, my mother instantly began telling me with all sorts of things, how I should act during the Summoning, what suit I should wear, how I should react, all things to do with the System. Once again. I mentally blocked out the things my mother was telling me, it was all the normal things she would tell me each day.
Sometimes, I would imagine what living like an Error would be like. I would be able to run around on the open plains, no one would be allowed to stop me from doing it because I could just escape from them! It would be absolutely amazing. Unfortunately, that probably won't be my future. From what gifts that I have inherited, I probably would be sorted as a Worker.
Let's just fast forward to the Summoning
"Alright! Remember everything I've told you. Stand up straight, push your shoulders back! Goodness me, smile a bit too, you seem like you are arriving at someone's funeral." My mother snapped, wiping something only visible to her off my face.
I scowled at her before walking off towards my assigned seat in the Great Hall. It took us almost 20 minutes to find, I never knew there were so many 15-year-olds this year.
"Okay! Everyone please take your seats and listen up. Today will be the day you officially enter the wonderful System. As you should know, there are three sections. Medic, Worker, and Councillor!" the President began.
"But sir? What about the Errors?" a child from the back asked.
