The modern clean cut steps of LASVA. I stood before them in all of their grandeur. Honestly, I don't know why. They weren't historic like Harvard or Yale. But they were the steps to my future. Whatever it would hold. They were relatively new steps actually, with barely any chipping. I studied the precise cuts until Skylar nudged me with her elbow.
"Come on, move,"
I began to walk up the steps when someone forcefully pushed past me. "Shit," I spat as I stumbled.
It was a guy with brown hair and soft brownish hazel eyes and stud earrings. He rolled his eyes at my accusational curse and continued on running up the stairs.
"The nerve," I muttered. I continued my way up.
The corridor were busy with people shuffling to classes. Before making it to the video work class I quickly checked to see if the classes I had recently signed up for had been processed and I had been accepted. I went into the room for the class. It was spacious with far apart chairs and tables. Windows, lightstands, cameras, and tripods lined the walls. A tall red haired woman walked to the desk at the front of the class and perched her self on top of it. I sat at a table with Skylar and another boy. The woman at the front cleared her throat and put a pair of glasses on her face. Everyone silenced.
"I'm Professor Gena Lichen," she announced "Professional photographer slash camera artist." She narrowed her green eyes. "Now it's time to see what kind of great future camera artists and disappointing flunk outs we have."
As she finished the sentence, someone barrelled through the door. It was the boy who knocked into me on the stairs.
Professor Lichen looked at him. "And you are?"
"...Dean Nelson."
"I don't have a Dean Nelson listed... actually I have a Dean Nelson listed also known as-"
Dean cut her off "Yup that's me,"
The only open seat was one next to me. He flopped his backpack down on the chair and sat. I shielded my face with my hand and turned away from him.
"So this class will not be much paperwork or tests. It will be mostly homework like filming and editing. Mastering techniques. Designing new ways to capture the eye and ears. To draw in the mind and consume and absorb the person observing into a world of your creation. That is what we do. We are artists who enclose emotions in our work. Who suck people into new words. Who dominate the mind." Professor Lichen stressed each word like it was the most important. "So we're starting off with a simple excercise. I want to see how you can do a simple video of another person. About anything you want. Pair up."
I almost fell on Sky scooting next to her to call dibs on partnership. I didn't want to be stuck with that asshole Dean. After class, Sky pulled my schedule out of my hand. "You have nothing till three like I do. What do you want to do?"
I shrugged. "Work on the homework?"
"Nah, let's do something fun girl!" She nudged my arm.
"Uh, well I've never been to California beaches before."
As I said this, I was distracted by something. I saw Dean in the classroom angrily talking to the Professor. He seemed to be explaining something
We headed home to grab a few things to go to the beach. One of our assignments was a film sample. Beach shots would be perfect. I packed a beach bag and then we went.
The beach wasn't very packed because it was 7 am on a Wednesday. Sky unloaded her things which surprisingly included a surf board.
"I've been surfing a while," she explained "I grew up here and would escape my dad sometimes by surfing with a few friends. It's fun!"
She picked up her beach bag and be both set up an umbrella and two beach towels. I lay on my stomach. The hot sand pressed into my bare stomach. I was wearing a dark blue bikini. Almost my entire body besides my face had healed or somehow naturally concealed its gashes from the world.
Anyway, I wiggled my toes in my flip flops. I half missed the cool fall weather in New Hampshire, but a change of pace is always good. I slipped on some wire sunglasses with blue tint lenses and put on a little sunscreen for my extremely pale skin. I took out my current novel and lay with it on my towel with my earbuds in my ears, iPod tucked in the bikini bottom rim. Pretty soon Sky was next to me. She pulled an earbuds out of my ear.
"I'll be on a wave with the water proof camera, okay?"
I nodded and tucked it back into my ear.Skylar's POV
I jogged with my silver surfboard tucked under an arm. I positioned it in front of myself and pushed into the folding waves. Fairly large, I thought as I paddled out. As I got my body half submerged, I stiffened up for a second. The water was a bit rigid. I was far enough out and I got ready to leap on top of the board. A good wave rippled through the icy water. I caught it. I stood and everything slowed down. The freezing water droplets hung off of my skin. My breath and heart were all I heard. Loose hair from my ponytail blew wildly. The wind whistled. I was on the wave, angling up the front of it. The nose of my board cut through the deep blue crest. Before I knew it, I was on shore.
Sammy's POV
I looked up from my book. Someone had moved their umbrella into my sun. There weren't a lot of people on the beach so there was a lot of room. The man was angling his umbrella. I stood up. "Excuse me?"
He turned around and my heart skipped a beat. It was that dick Dean. Shirtless. With finely toned and defined abs. And seeing me in a bikini. He stared rudely until he saw my face. He rolled his eyes at me again. "Great, you," I mumbled.
"You?!"
"Yup it is me, and could ya move the damn umbrella out of my sun? Yeah thanks."
He stood still and did nothing.
"Ahem. Umbrella." I repeated.
He stood still.
"Fine." I set my book down and put away my iPod. I folded up my sunglasses and walked over to the swirling dancing waves of the ocean. In New Hampshire I used to body board so I took the board and started to paddle out. (A/N: If you don't know what body boarding is it's exactly the same as surfing except the board's smaller and you don't stand up, you lie your upper body or sit on your knees on the board) I saw Sky gracefully roll to the shore. She glided on top of the water and when she landed on shore she walked off of the board perfectly. She paddled out to me again and handed me the camera. "You could get some good shots," she pointed out.
I nodded and put the neck strap over my head.
Riding the wave back to shore, I propped myself up on my the board on my knees and snapped a few pics. I zoomed in with the lense. Focusing. The constant snapping sounds comforted me as the cool waves lapped at my bare back. I relaxed, not caring what my camera captured.
I stood up and dragged the board back across the sand because I wasn't in the mood. Lying on my stomach on the beach towel, I flipped through the pictures. None are really blurry, I thought but they all have- My thoughts cut off when I realized that Dean was in every single one of them, first his figure, but it zoomed closer and closer to him when I took the pictures. I gave out a sound of disgust. Dean almost jumped.
"What's wrong with you?" he growled.
"Shut up." I rolled my eyes, picked up my board and dragged it back to the water. I took shots of the ocean and of the ocean floor when I was pretty far out. I even took a few pics of Skylar as she rode. They were okay. I went back to my towel and flipped through the pictures. I felt someone's hard stare. I looked up to see Dean glaring at me like I was the grossest thing he'd ever seen.
"Why are you so pasty? You look sick!" He snickered like he'd never seen a pale person before.
"I'm from New England." I was annoyed. Luckily he decided to look away.
I listened to music and read my novel until Skylar came back, dripping water.
"Towel." She commanded. Without looking up in anticipation of Dean I handed her the towel. We arrived home and I changed into short shorts and a tank top. No more damp clothes for me.
Skylar's POV
I pressed the answering machine button and turned up the volume.
Listening while doing things is much more efficient. I put away laundry as the voice proclaimed "One. New messages"
As Sammy walked by, she cringed at the grammar.
Lachlan's voice sounded through the hall. "Hey Sky, I was wondering if you wanted to go to the movies Friday. I have idea where you could bring Sammy and I could bring my friend. What do you say? If our friends meet each other it gets a lot more real. Call me back. Okay bye!"
I sighed happily and picked up the phone to call Lachlan back.(A/N: Sorry this chapter took a while. Business. The writing should speed up a little. Also, I know the writing in this chapter is a little choppy. Not my best work. The more time have the less choppiness there will be. Sorry again!)
