It's raining, and Mary is completely soaked. Seeing a Sub Shop, she rushes towards it and enters, even though their sign clearly stated that they were closed. Walking in, she sees an employee and walks up to him.
"Hello, I was wondering if it's alright that I stay here until the rain stops?" She asks him politely with a smile, his attention elsewhere.
He looked up, meeting her eyes, "Oh, yea. Sure." He smiles at her and nods his head while Mary takes a quick glance at his name tag. Joseph, she reads.
She walks to a booth next to a window and sits on the seat with her clothes still absorbed with water. She stares out the window, hoping the rain would stop soon.
Joseph was bussing tables. When he got to the table Mary was sitting at, he watched her for just a minute. He carefully looks at her brown hair, how it was tied in a messy ponytail with strands of baby hair sticking up at the front of her face. He escaped the trance of her beauty and shook his head. He cleared his throat which got Mary's attention. "Hi, sorry may I-" he said, pointing to the table.
"Oh yes, of course." She smiles in embarassment. Mary gets up from the seat and wanders around the restaraunt. She admires the pictures hanging upon the walls and she notices familiarity in the owners' faces. "So, family business?"
Joseph was just about done wiping the booth table, "Uh yeah. My grandpa owned the restaraunt and passed it down to my dad...I'm Joseph, by the way." He gives her a half smile and walks toward her to shake her hand. She laughs and takes his hand, "Haha hi, I'm Mary." They both look at each other, smiling, for a few seconds with their hands still grasped. Realizing that they hadn't released each other's hands, Mary opens her hand and takes it to her side. Joseph does the same as he smiles toward the ground and walks behind the counter.
"So Mary? Are you from here?" Joseph asks as he cleans the counter.
"Yes. Born and raised." She looks at him and smiles.
"Oh, ha. Me too." He smiles back. They both hold each other's gaze until a glare of sunlight gets in Mary's eyes.
"Won't you look at that?" She says. They both look out the window. "Well, I better get going!"
"Yea, it was nice meeting you. Mary." They walk toward the door and he opens the door for her. She smiles at him as she walks through.
"Thank you." She says.
He waves goodbye as she walks to the crosswalk. Wow. He thinks.
...
They constantly meet up with one another, eventually falling in love, but one day Mary's parents get a job in Florida and Joseph and Mary had to seperate.
