Yellowcliff is one of those towns that are surely only meant to be driven through, without a second glance back. The main feature of the town, the cliffs look over a dark ocean that looks like it could kill. The yellow crops of wheat sway in the breeze. Descending down the cliff, you'll find the main street, which seems to have no decent shops. The beach is closed due to storms, and I can see waves crashing hard on the sand.
We turn into a side street, which, I assume, means we are close to our new home. Sure enough, we pull into a driveway near the end of the street. It looks average, two stories, brick, a standard house.
"Here we are!" My father says enthusiastically. I think he's the only one excited about this move, mum is just supporting him. My dad is a doctor, and he jumped at the opportunity to help "change a little town." With his magical remedies.
I get out of the car, and grab one of the boxes from beside me. Dad unlocks the house, and I step in, almost cautiously. I hear the moving truck driving down the road, but ignore it. I go into a room that is flooded with light, from windows all across one wall. There is a fireplace, and another door leads to a little laundry.
"Quenby!" My mum calls out from the kitchen, a small, simple space. I walk in, and lean against a counter. My father starts the conversation.
"Honey, since moving was such a trouble for you, we have decided to let you have the master bedroom upstairs." He says, but he doesn't finish his sentence before I'm racing for the stairs. The bedroom is easy enough to find, down a short hallway. The minute I step in I see the potential of the room, with the pretty wallpaper, and excessive space. There's a small walk in closet, and an ensuite bathroom too. This might make the move tolerable.
I ran back down the stairs and showered my parents with hugs, kisses and "I love you"s as they start to unload things from the truck. When we get to the furniture at the back of the truck, I'm dying to go unpack my stuff, but I have to help here.
We move the last sofa into the lounge area, and I spring up the stairs. Dad comes up to assemble my bed, which is the same as in my old home, with mesh netting at the head of the bed like a little tent. I put my lamps on either side of the bed, and my bookshelves and desk fit perfectly on the walls beside the gorgeous glass French doors.
I unpack my books onto the shelves, and start to hang my clothes in the closet. It's a long, painstaking job, but in the end I get it done, and chuck the empty boxes down the stairs. I look around the room, and I'm proud of what I've accomplished. I'll be happy to spend my time in here, but it would be better if this room was all the way back in Clearfield.
I go down the stairs and check out my parents room, and help them unpack the kitchen stuff, and by then it's dark. I kiss my parents goodnight, and make my way upstairs. I sit down on my bed, and that's when it all comes to me. I'm not in Clearfield anymore. I'm not living down the road from the boy I love anymore. I grab my phone, and send him a text. I know him, he'll be up this time of night.
Q: Hey baby :) <3
A: Hi! How is Yellowcliff?
Q: Bleurgh, but I got the best room in the house :D
A: Any windows I can climb in? :p
Q: Of course :))) I miss you :'(
A: I miss you too :((( want to Skype?
I really do want to hear his voice, and see his face, so I call him. And when he answers I can see his beautiful face, beaming through the camera of his laptop at me. And it lights me up, and I feel truly happy for the first time in the day. I give him a tour of my room, and he susses out the window so he can "stealthily attack me" when I'm least expecting it. We talk, and when I look at the clock I realize it's nearly 4:00 in the morning.
"Babe, it's 3:57."
"Don't go."
"I'll never leave you."
"I love you so much."
"I love you too." I say as I hang up the call, and flop on my bed. That boy, I'm gonna miss him. The way he smells, the way he looks, the way he sounds, the way he does everything.
I will myself to fall asleep, and eventually I do. I wake up to the ear grinding sound of a lawnmower, a damn lawnmower. I look at my clock which tells me it's 7:00. Who the HECK, mows their lawns at 7:00 in the morning?
I roll out of bed and chuck on a jumper, and shuffle down the stairs. If there's one thing I know, it's that I'm not a morning person. I slouch into the kitchen, and thankfully, there's an freshly brewed pot of coffee. I pour myself some, and lean against the bench, practically inhaling the stuff. Mum comes in the room, and she means business.
"Q, today we are going to go get your new school uniform, and enroll you, and pick up a couple of things we need for the house. Go get changed." She says with a smile, and marches off into another room before I can blink.
I slouch back up the stairs, and somehow manage a quick shower. I pick out an outfit, a black Led Zeppelin t-shirt, denim shorts, and white high tops, and put my hair in two low ponytails, finishing the look with a choker necklace. Today was going to be a long day.
