Chapter 9

Immediately all I could fathom to do the next morning was Skype Sarah. I was off school, Mom had called up and said it was best for me and I had agreed; I liked not having to get up anyway.
I pulled my laptop off of my side, narrowly missing my drink.

Just the thought of Ariana sent a pain through my chest, like an invisible knife. I remembered that, despite it being my laptop, she loved to use it and anonymously reply to fans and things. She had touched this computer. Her fingers had typed using this keyboard. I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down, reminding myself she was in a better place now. Clicking on my username, I typed in my password, and waited for it to load. It had never been the fastest thing but I refused to replace it because of all the stories I wrote when I was young saved on there, a few of them with Ari's help. I couldn't bring myself to read them, I'd probably just cry.
Slowly I clicked on Skype, and typed in Sarah's username.
I tapped on the add as a friend button, and deleted the automated message, replacing it with: "hi Sarah. It's Kerry...lets go all Sherlock on this crap."
I felt like a badass as I clicked send. Almost immediately she added me back, replying with the rofl and thumbs up emojis.
And so we talked for hours on end, discussing possible culprits and making diagrams of things and writing a list of all the cruel comments we could find. I had Ariana's phone in my hand, and I fiddled with her phone case. For some reason, it faintly smelt like her, and I had to hold back the tears. It seemed like I'd been doing that a lot lately.
"Kerry!" Sarah suddenly exclaimed, making me jump. "I just had a good idea!"
"What is it?" I replied hopefully.
"Go through her camera roll."
It had never occurred to me that Ariana may have screenshotted some of the things that had been said, and I eagerly tapped on the photos app. Bingo.
"You genius! I've found a collection of a lot of hate."
Grabbing my notepad, I scrawled the usernames included in the screenshots.

"I swear...some of these people must have had a terrible childhood." I sighed.
"Or a terrible jealousy condition."
Hmm. I wonder why someone would even want an innocent girl to die?! That's messed up. I'd do anything to be with her...
Suddenly there was a sharp knock on my door.
"Come in." I answered.
"Lunch's ready honey bunch."
"Hi Kerry's mom!" Sarah waved cheerfully.
"Hello love."
"I'll call you back Sair. See you."
"Ta ta."
I pressed end call and followed Mom downstairs. Sitting down at the breakfast bar, I thanked her for my lunch: a brown seeded bread sandwich with cucumber and ham inside, lovingly made with her special recipe bread that never failed to impress me.
"Mmm..." I made a sound as I savoured the bread. "That is lovely, you're amazing mom."
She beamed with pride. I hadn't seen her smile like that since Ariana's death.
"Thankyou love."
We sat in silence for a moment, and then she spoke again:
"Ker, you're a very smart girl you know..."
"Thanks, mom."
"And I don't want that to change..."
"Yeah?"
"So I told your principal you'd be in for school tomorrow."
I gulped, suddenly feeling sick. I didn't want to go back to hell! My life was already horrible, and the cruelness of my classmates would just make it worse.
Despite the crushing feeling in my heart, I smiled, taking another bite out of my sandwich.
"Oh, I agree..thanks mom." I said quietly.
In reality I was completely petrified about what tomorrow could bring...
