trigger warning: mention of blood and suicide, read at your own risk.
Klaus and a few witches were in the house Elijah and Elena were living together. They were looking around, hoping Elijah had a loophole for doppelgänger's blood usage other than keeping her locked and hidden.
A journal caught his attention. Klaus frowned and picked journal, letting a paper to fall inside of it. He frowned and grabbed the piece of paper folded neatly. He opened it and sat down to read it.
Dearest Elena,
This letter is for you if any misfortunate events such as my death would occur. First of all, I want to tell you that I was honored to meet someone as loving and caring as you are. I will never forget a soul like yours. If I am dead, and if I died while protecting you, I know no greater reason to. I myself always saw you as my family, the sister I have not seen in a century. Maybe I felt the guilt whenever I looked at you, because I could not save Katerina. In either way, you mattered to me so much not because of the blood you had in your veins or the face you had; you are somebody to me and you deserve the world. If I was able to give you the future you have always wanted to with my death, I am more than peaceful. However, if I could not save you, I am sorry Elena. I am sincerely sorry that I could not protect you as I promised you to.
Always and Forever,
Elijah.Klaus gulped the knot on his throat. He put the letter down and looked around the house. He stood up and got out of the house, speeding back to his own house. He walked in and faked a smirk. "I have a surprise to you sweetheart!" He frowned when he could not hear a heartbeat. And he frowned even more when he smelled blood. His eyes widened as he sped into the kitchen.
Blood, there was so much blood. And it was Elena's blood. And someone was laying dead on the ground, it was Elena but he did not want to believe.
The rest was such a rush, all he was able to do was crying and apologizing for millions of times. He held her dead body in his arms and continued screaming in pain. He was not sad about his hybrids, or his big grand army. He felt something for her. Or he thought he did.
He had an obsession towards her, that was one of the reasons why Elijah took her and ran away. He did not want her to die because of him, or in the hands of him; he wanted her to have a full life without Klaus' any good or bad influences.
But he was not successful at all.

"Maybe he was in love with you" Katerina said to Elena as they were both watching Klaus silently letting his tears to fall down through his cheeks as he was looking at Elena's grave.
Elena looked at the man with zero emotion, as if he was not crying for her. "What he had was an obsession, the one that killed me" Katerina nodded sadly, but then looked back to the girl standing next to her. "You cannot stay in this city for long, neither I can. If he learns that I am still alive, he will hunt me down"
Elena nodded and they both continued watching the man standing. "What about Elijah?" Elena asked as she sighed, before continuing. "There is truly no way to bring him back, is there?" Katerina shook her head and looked down, it had been amazing five hundred years with him, even though everyone thought she was dead and Elijah was devastated. Killing someone actually was a great way to con someone as dead, as long as they came back as a vampire.
"It was nice to meet you Katerina, I will be seeing you again. I promise" Katerina smiled and nodded, both doppelgängers embraced each other before Katerina speeding away. Elena sighed again, this was the end, this was how she wanted all of it to end.
She had watched how he cried and begged for her to come back as Katerina was laying there inside of the blood after she saved her. So she was aware it was not all because of his army, maybe he was really in love with her and maybe she could return those feelings in another life.
But love was not always healthy, and certainly not a good motivation for the ones who are obsessed with power. She smiled sadly before speeding away, starting her new life as the creature she always wished she would never become.
the end.
