A/N: I know this ain't how adoption work. But for the story it is.
________________________________Two days had passed since the little girl had been put into the orphanage and she barely spoke five words the entire time. It was almost at the end of the business day when a black BMW pulled up in front of the building and a man stepped out from the back passenger side.
He looked at the building as he walked towards the front door. He knocked twice before the door opened to a teenage girl who seemed to be about seventeen. "Sorry, but it is before our opening hours-" she stopped talking when she looked up to see who it was. "But I think we can stay open a little bit earlier for you sir. Please come inside while I get Miss Brown." The young lady said with a smile as she opened the door wider for the man.
Stepping into the orphanage, it was clear that the workers had their hands full with the number of children that were there. The teenager told the man to wait in by the stairs, that was across the hall from a dining room, as she went to find Miss Brown.
As a few minutes passed by, there were some kids of all ages moving around the main floor. A group of two teen girls and a teen boy would walk by whispering and giggling here, an elementary-aged girl walking out of the kitchen with a snack in her hands there. All the kids were well behaved and everything was nice and clean. Even though it was one of the nicer orphanages, there was a spark of hope in all the younger kids' eyes when they saw the man. The older ones knew that they probably wouldn't get adopted but still had some hope. It seemed as if all the kids knew who he was but decided to treat him like any other people who would walk into the orphanage, with respect before going back to what they were doing.
The man was snapped out of his thoughts when the teen came back with a rather large woman behind her. "Miss Brown, this is the man I was telling you about." The teenager said to the woman before leaving the two to talk. She wore a bright orange suit that didn't help her at all and her face had way to much makeup on with the same bright orange on her lips. The woman reached out her hand as she smiled and he kindly shook her hand and returned a small smile. "How can I help you today Mr. Wayne?" Miss Brown asked.
"Yes, I believe you can help me, Miss Brown. It is Miss Brown, right?" He asked and she nodded with a smile. "Well, I've been thinking about adopting a kid for a while now. I heard that your orphanage is the best and it looks like it is." He answered with a charming smile. There was a soft pink covered the woman's face.
"Well, that's good to hear. We do like to keep our orphanage in the best shape we can. Anyway, enough about that, I'll call the children down here." She said as she walked to a loudspeaker on the wall. The sound of windchimes rang through the building before the woman talked, "Children, please come down to the main hall. We have a visitor."
No more than ten seconds later the sound of feet coming down the stairs was heard. Looking over his shoulder, Bruce saw children lined up against the wall from oldest to youngest in front of him. Miss Brown walked back in with a smile on her face as she looked at the children but it soon fell when she didn't see one face. "It seems like our newest addition is still in her room. Anthony, please go get MJ." She said in an overly sweet voice as if it was forced. One of the older boys nodded his head before stepping out of line and walking to the stairs, and as soon as he was out of sight, he started running.
Ten minutes earlier...
A girl was sat there on her bed staring at the wall. She was so deep in thought about the events that happened recently, that she barely heard the people passing by the doorway.
Time seemed to pass by slowly for the girl as she continued to stare at the wall, but was interrupted by a crash outside of her room. Snapping her head towards the door she could see one of the only people who actually wanted to interact with her. Anthony was playing on the floor staring at the ceiling as he tried to catch his breath.
The girl cleared her throat as a means to get his attention, and luckily it does. Anthony turns his head towards the girl and smiled. "Hey MJ. Miss Brown sent me up here to tell you that we are all waiting for you downstairs. We have a visitor." He said as he was finally able to sit up. MJ looked at him before nodding her head as she got up. She walked over to him and reached out her hand to him, clearly offering to help him up.
With a small chuckle, Anthony took her hand and got to his feet. "Well, we should keep them waiting any longer." Anthony said before scurrying back the way he came a few minutes earlier. MJ didn't know why he was so excited but decided not to question it and followed him downstairs.
Once they made it down the stairs, the two of them fell in line but the girl was standing slightly behind the boy in an attempt to hide. And they mimicked all the other kids and watched the floor as if it was suddenly interesting.
"Well, this is all the children here, sir." Miss Brown said with a smile clear in her voice but all the kids knew that she was just putting on a show for the visitor.
"Who's that little girl hiding back there?" The visitor asked Miss Brown. The girl immediately recognized the voice and froze as the other kids made a path for the adults to see her better.
"Oh we don't know her name, but she only responds to Ella so she's clearly not deaf. She came in a couple of days ago after the building she and her aunt lived in burned down. She refuses to speak to anyone. I've only heard her say one or two words." Miss Brown explained eyeing the girl. She was about to say more but was interrupted by the visitor.
"I want to adopt her." He said without a second thought as he nodded his head towards the girl, surprising everyone. But what surprised everyone, even more, was that Ella lifted her head and looked at Bruce in surprise and confusion. She wiped that away quickly as she walked over to Bruce and gave him a hug.
Bruce smiled as he picked her up and looked at Miss Brown. "I want to adopt this girl."
A nervous laugh escaped Miss Browns's unnaturally ornage lips but she nodded and waved for them to follow her to her office. Bruce Wayne signed all the necessary paperwork without setting the girl down.
Just over an hour had past before all the paperwork was finished. Miss Brown lead Bruce and Ella back out of her office into the main hallway. They all said goodbye before Bruce and Ella made their way out of the building.
Outside, Ella's eyes wides as she saw a black BMW waiting for them. Much to the girls confusion, Bruce opened the back passenger door and climbed in. In the front of the car, there was a man who was clearly older then Bruce but not old and decrepit, sat behind the steering wheel. Glancing at the rear view mirror with an eyebrow raised and asked in a British accent, "No bags?"
The look in Bruce's eyes told the older man that she had non. Bruce quickly put a smile back on his face and looked at the girl. Alfred started the car and started driving through the streets of Gotham.
"Ella, this is Alfred Pennyworth, my butler." Bride told the girl who smiled and waved at Alfred. MJ just nodded looked out the window and other then the occasional question, Ella just watched as the buildings go by.
It was not to long before they arrived at a pair of gates that opened up to a long driveway to a huge mansion.
