Chapter 7: Brooch

Friday came and it was the schedule for the annual sem-starter party. For this year, the theme was a masquerade ball. My mom have already sent me my outfit yesterday along with my mask that fits the color of my red velvet suit.

It's been two days since my argument with Mew and we haven't cleared everything between us yet. Or wait. Let me rephrase that. I haven't apologized to him yet after telling him that we weren't friends.

Even if he gave me blueberry pancakes that morning, he still was very distant to me after, making me feel that he did not want any interaction with me. Most of the time, he's not in our room. We would only see each other at night before he goes to sleep and he would not look me in the eye, that is why I had a hard time finding the right timing to apologize.

I'm not sure where he spends most of his time other than training and practice. I found out from Anais that the baskteball team's schedule is every early morning and late afternoon. Other than that, I have no idea where Mew spends the rest of his time. Several girls have come knocking on our door looking for him yesterday and the other day. I was not surprised at all because I know his background of being a playboy.

I wouldn't be surprised either if one day, someone will knock looking for Mew because he got her pregnant. I just don't know why I felt a heavy feeling with that thought. Anyway, it's not my business anymore.

When I woke up this morning, Mew was no longer on his bed. I've been practicing my apology since yesterday. I just couldn't find the courage to face him.

But I swear, I'll apologize to him before this day ends. I can't go on pretending like we're strangers to each other. It's agonizing!

I was busy the whole morning researching about the past sem-starter parties. Marriane assigned me to cover the event and write a feature story which will be published tomorrow on our school paper's website. Which means that I'll have to be taking notes later at the party for my article.

As I was browsing through my laptop, reading the past articles about the sem-starters on my study table on my side of the room, a knock was heard from the door. I stood up from my chair to see who it was. Mew is not here with me because like I said, he is avoiding me.

I opened the door and saw Hughie carrying a bunch of papers. I gave him a "what-are-you-doing-here" look. He handed me the papers even if I wasn't ready to accept them.

"Here are the previous newsletters and tabloids. Some of them include news and feature stories about the past sem-starter parties," he said seriously.

I raised an eyebrow at him.

Why is he helping me? The last time I checked, I was not friends with this annoying guy.

"Before you actually start making assumptions, I want to make things clear. I am not trying to help you. I just want to make sure that you won't submit a worthless article tomorrow."

Wow. Can he read minds? And why does he sound so defensive?

"Okay," I said, not really caring about what he just said. "You came all the way here just to say that?"

"Obviously. That's how much I care about the publication."

"You could have just messaged me in the group chat and I could have picked these up at the office. Why bother yourself coming here?" I asked suspiciously.

He was caught off guard by my question so he looked away. "Uhm, I also v-visited a friend from a-another room and thought I can just drop the articles here as well." He couldn't maintain eye contact.
