Gilly had to admit, going through rooms was a lot faster with someone else there. As she grabbed the small mouse toy she turned to look at Kayla, giving the other girl a thumbs up. The other girl pointed behind her, her eyes wide. Gilly didn't need to turn around to know she upset something though, the scent of sulfur filled her nose. "Dang it..." She muttered, tucking the mouse under her arm. She felt something try to grab her jacket but she ducked out of the way, moving to lean against the bed.She turned to look at the thing and quickly found that if you stared at it then its movements were slowed. "Kayla!" The blonde had instinctively put a hand over her nose, trying to block out the smell from the monster.
"What?" She yelled, her brown eyes flickering over to Gilly. The brunette ducked under a chair as it made another grab at the plushie. "Did you figure something out?" Kayla's voice was drowned out as the monster threw the bed against the wall, the sound of it breaking leaving a ringing in Gilly's ear.
"Keep looking at it! It's slower if you do!" Gilly made a sprint for the door, her boots skidding across the wooden planks. Kayla stared at her like she was crazy, her arms crossed on her chest.
"This is a single room! I can't help you!" She then pointed to the name on the door and the block they'd been using to prop it open. "Can you run backwards?" She asked, leaning against the door.
"Why would I ever need to run backwards?" Gilly yelled, kicking a rocking chair over in an attempt to stop it. "Is that a skill you have?" Kayla shrugged, taking a step back when the dresser hit the wall beside her.
"I just thought that maybe you learned when you were raising your siblings!" Gilly glared at the other girl, raising the hand that wasn't holding the stuffie up in the air.
"Why would I do that when I could walk behind them?" She answered, tossing the mouse into her left hand. "Have you ever taken care of a kid?" She yelled, her voice going up a few octaves when she felt the monster's hand skim her back.
"I was the youngest of three! And my mother never really let us have jobs!" Kayla retorted, a crease forming in between her eyebrows. Gilly blew a raspberry at her, "Real mature Cobbler!" The monster screamed behind them, obviously tired of the girls screaming. Gilly whipped around to stare at it, its movement beginning to look like they were going through mud.
"Aren't you a teacher?"
"Middle school! I can normally trust my students to stay in line!" The taller girl scrunched her eyebrows at that, she had two middle school brothers and she was sure their teachers never took their eyes off them. Gilly looked at the mouse under her arm, an idea sparking in her brain.
"You want this?" Gilly raised the mouse over her head and its head perked up, for a second Gilly thought it was going to start rapidly nodding. "Well then go get it!" Gilly threw the stuffed mouse towards the door expecting to fly through the door frame, but it just bounced back into the room. Almost like there was a force field keeping it in. Kayla looked at the mouse in front of her, her eyebrows raised.
She remembered the first room they'd tackled together, Gilly had tried to follow her in and they quickly learned that if the room only had one name then only one person could go in and out. So Kayla was stuck just staring at the prize waiting for them... "Did you really think that's work?" Kayla asked.
"It didn't go through?" Gilly questioned, her eyes still on the grey monster.
"No! You have to leave with it, that's how this thing works!" Kayla reminded her and Gilly let out a loud groan, her fist pounding her head.
"Listen! I'm under a lot of pressure right now!" Gilly yelled at her, keeping her eyes trained on the monster as it slowly tried to reach for the mouse. "You try running from a monster!"
