Gilly shoved another door open with her hip, completely ignoring the words scrawled on it. This room was a nursery, she could tell that for sure. The walls were a pale blue and a cradle sat in the middle of the room. There was also a table near the window, a familiar envelope hidden behind a vase. "Let's see what it is this time..." She muttered under her breath, her eyes glancing around the room. She quickly grabbed the letter, tearing off the wax seal. How do they have time to stamp each one of these? Gilly thought as she scanned the letter."What was Felix's first word..." She read, completely skipping the small paragraph detailing just what danger waited for her in this room. She bit her cheek, Felix had been the youngest to learn to talk when they were growing up. If Gilly was correct, she had been four when he'd spoken his first words. She remembered Anna's question because she was heavily involved in it, but she wasn't even sure she was there when Felix talked for the first time. Letting out a small breath Gilly went back through to the letter, mainly to the letter listing the horrific death that was waiting in the nursery.
One thing she'd learned in her hours at the manor is that some deaths you could fight off, or quickly answer the question so it couldn't kill you. In the room before this one she'd been tasked with sorting a toy box the way her mother would have and she'd gotten in wrong, so when the walls had started to close in on her she had thrown everything in as quickly as she could. Apparently even a haunted house knew how neglectful her mother could be.
The third paragraph was short, only containing two sentences. Which, in extreme detail, described how the cradle held a quite realistic baby mannequin, and Gilly definitely didn't give the cradle a creeped out glance. It also mentioned that the baby was charmed to kill anyone who answered the question wrong, it also mentioned that while you died it would chant the word you answered with.
Creepy... But not creepy enough that Gilly would back away, leaving the room for when she had someone with her. Even though the thought did cross her mind. She racked her brain, trying to remember even the smallest hint of her brother's first word. She did remember him constantly repeating pasta every time he was hungry, purely because she couldn't eat pasta today because of hearing the word constantly. She highly doubted it was dada, their father wasn't around enough for any of them to say it.
And it wasn't mama because Felix was the first sibling Gilly had taken under her wing... That was when it hit her, in kindergarten she had a crush on her teacher and she used to confine in Felix strictly because he couldn't talk. She also remembered how her mother had yelled at her after the word had come out of his mouth.
"Gay! The answer is gay!" Gilly yelled, prepared to jump on the table in front of her if she was wrong. The room was silent and Gilly took that as a good sign, no killer baby mannequins. She let out a breath of relief, "Good no killer babies..." Gilly looked around the room once more, checking to see if there was anything worth taking. Or any clues on who was running this entire operation.
But the room was almost completely empty, and if the cradle hadn't been there Gilly would have thought this was a half finished room. She grabbed the letter and walked out, her eyes scanning the hall for any other doors with her title on them. When she saw none, she leaned against the door behind her. Allowing herself a small break before she started her journey once again. Gilly rummaged through her pockets pulling out the other three letters she had, each one from a different room. She'd been trying to find keywords in them, something that could help figure everything out.
She'd thought of it after someone that wasn't the author of the letters, had put the date in the corner of the yellowed paper. It was dated two weeks before she had gotten there and when she first saw it sent a chill down her spine. Now she just saw it as a clue. Gilly looked at the door in front of her, the spiral lettering spelling "Storyteller". The writing wasn't the same as Gilly's, where her's looked like someone had taken a screwdriver to every door while the storyteller's reminded her of a signature. Something you'd find in a signed copy of a book.
