The next morning Lavi and I piled on our layers of clothes. He asked me for assistance on his. There are so many layers to be tied on, it's gets tough.
I kneeled down in front of him to lace up one of his longer shirts. I liked being this close to him. I could feel excitement dwelling in me over this.
I help him on a few other layers, leaving his cloak off so he can at least help pack up books. He smiles at me. I wrap his scarf around his neck. I linger there for a second, close to him.
I turn around as soon as I start to blush. I know this feeling. I've only ever felt this feeling once.
Love.
Love is Bookman poison. That's one of the rules. Any attachments or affections are strictly prohibited.
I continue to put layers on myself. Attachments and affections. They can't taint information in my case. I'm not observing Lavi.
Am I?
I shove everything down. I don't need to find out right away. I can leave things as is...
I turn around to find him staring at me with a small grin on his face.
"Can I help you?" I ask, my cockiness getting the better of me.
"Nope," he grins wider.
I glare at him before continuing to put books into a trunk.
Suddenly, his arms wrap around my waist, giving me a hug. I freeze up. I didn't expect something to this extreme.
"What?" I turn around, faceing him.
"Nothin~" He grins, burying his face into the folds of my clothing.
"You two ready?" Grandpa Bookman shoves open the door.
Lavi immediately lets go of me. I don't move. Grandpa Bookman stares, a questioning look on his face.
"Are you?"
"Just need this last bit, Grandpa." I lift a stack of books. "There, done."
"Let's get going. We have a carriage ride to the North, then we walk from there." He glares.
I nod, grabbing the suitcase, Lavi grabbing his messenger back, and Bookman hauling a tiny suitcase. We all head out to the carriage.

It takes a month of travel to get close to the Russian border. We stop in a quiet village near the border to rest up for the night. The twilight silence doesn't strike us as odd.
"That looks like a hotel there." I point to a tall building.
Bookman leads us silently towards it. The lights are out. Maybe this place has a curfew. I look around. The town is small, with small houses but one grand building stands above the rest. It's a beautiful, stain-glass window church.
The hotel reveals nothing. The front desk has no one behind it. I venture back to the dining room. All around, is cold food and piles of ashes.
"Bookman..." I say, warning in my voice.
"You two get out to the carriage, quickly." His whispers, handing Lavi to me.
I grip Lavi's hand in mine and run with him outside. Panic is rising in me, something I haven't felt in a good while.
We race down the street, turning the corner to where our carriage was parked.
All that's left is ashes, and burning, black pieces of wood.
We stop, not knowing where else to turn. A gray monster stands over the rubble, laughing.
"What is that?" Lavi asks.
The thing turns towards us. The six foot mechanical creature has red eyes, sharp teeth, claws and the Roman numberal for two on its chest.
"Ooooh," It grins. "Two little children? This should be fun."
The Innocence in my eye sends out a vibration that shakes my entire body. I can feel myself still trembling afterward.
"Sylvaine..." Lavi sounds worried.
"I'm almost going to level up!" The creature laughs, shooting something at us.
Lavi takes me down, helping the both of us dodge the bullets. They create huge holes in the bulding behind us.
I force myself up, pulling Lavi with me. We run down the alley nearest to us. We don't stop running, hoping to get away. Grandpa Bookman is nowhere to be seen. I push my anxiety down. I have to focus on how to escape this situation...
I halt to a stop just before falling, catching Lavi so he won't before us is the edge of town, a cliff about thirty feet up.
"I found yoooou!" The creature appears behind us.
There's no hope left.
This is the end of the Bookman successors.
The creature digs its claws into the ground. The area around Lavi's feet and my own begins to crumble.
I send him a worried glance as the ground gets too weak.
I fall.
