As I travelled to the Order in the previous year, I had been forced to read every bit of Bookman information on the Black Order and its affiliations. I read about all their dark ugly secrets and their greatest achievements.
One of my favorite topics was the Second Exorcist project. Although it failed, these exorcists were near invincible and stronger than imaginable. I was very interesting in the last two, Alma Karma and Yu Kanda.
I met Yu Kanda "officially" at my breakfast the next morning.
I found my way to the cafeteria by following the scent of food. It felt so strange not to have Bookman and Lavi around me.
"Who is this fine young lady right here?" The man at the service counters says in such a loud voice I swear people could hear it on the other side of this vast room.
"Hello there, I'm Sylvaine." I grin pleasantly.
"And very ladylike! What can I get you deary? Anything you'd like."
I pause, thinking for a moment. "Could I get youtiao and soya bean milk jiang? I had it once while I was observing a battle in China."
"Sure! Coming right up!" The man disappears.
"Hey Sylvaine." Lenalee comes up beside me. "Find your way here easily this morning?"
"Yup." I grin.
"Hello Miss Lenalee! The usual I take it?"
"Good morning Jerry. And you know it!"
"Here you go Miss Sylvaine. I'll see you later."
"Syl, if you go find a seat, I'll sit with you when my food is up." Lenalee winks at me.
I feel myself start to blush. Everyone here is so kind. They almost automatically assume I'm their friend and act accordingly.
I notice someone sitting himself down. He is wearing a plain white dress shirt and has his long black hair pulled back. I recognize him from a book I read once.
I lead my way to the table he sat down at. I sit across from him but down a bit along the bench. He's eating cold soba.
I take a sip of my tea before talking. Tea is essential to getting me up every morning.
"You're Yu Kanda." I say.
He gives me a glance but says nothing.
"You're one of the second exorcists. I read about you guys. It was you and-"
"Don't you dare say his name. He's dead now. That's all that matters." Yu Kanda glares. "And who are you?"
"Sylvaine Phoenix-Bookman. A proud new exorcist." I grin softly.
"Don't you ever call me Yu. It's just-"
"Good morning Kanda." Lenalee sits down across from me. "I see you met Sylvaine."
Kanda lets out a little hmph, turning back to his noodles.
I dunk one of my youtiao into the milk. I want to try talking to this Kanda more, having already read every paper on the Second Exorcists I could find in the Bookmen records. I thought they were so cool being who they were but feeling a deep sadness for the way they were created.
"There you are Lenalee." A man in a white lab coat with an Australian accent pauses at the end of our table. "And Sylvaine too. You're both to report to the science room after you're done eating. Lenalee, make sure to bring everyone's coffee."
"You got it Reever." Lenalee grins.
He nods walking away. I slow down my eating, afraid to have to go to the science room alone. I'd rather go with Lenalee.
"I wonder what they need me for." I mumble.
"Well, there's your exorcist uniform for one. They usually measure you so it fights properly and to your specifications. And they're probably going to make your piece of Innocence into a weapon."
"How are they going to do that? My Innocence is in my eye."
"Oh! You're a parasite type? I assumed that was an injury."
I flip my patch up, showing it to her.
"Have you ever invoked it before?"
"No. Gramps never let me." I sigh.
"This will be interesting. Well, you can help me carry all the coffee downstairs for my brother and the other scientists down there."
Kanda gets up to leave. He sends a small glance my direction but leaves quickly.
"What's up with him?" I ask.
"Oh, Kanda? He doesn't like anyone. He's a tough person and a great exorcist. Anyway, we're finished eating. Let's go." Lenalee grins.
