sunlight filtered in through the windows and fell on rona's eyes as they flickered open, taking in the morning light. she let out a breath, feeling her body ache from the night before and it sure wasn't because of the performance that evening.
her eyes fell on her fiance lying next to her, lying on his back, sound asleep after the performance last night. the first thing she noticed was how relaxed he looked, his expression soft and peaceful, like he got the best sleep he had in years. she smiled, remembering the night before, the way her dress fell down as he helped her with the zipper, how he took off his blazer and unbutton his shirt, how they held onto each other under the sheets, lost in bliss and ecstasy and every time their eyes met in the dark, they repeated it again and again and again...
she leaned on her elbow, brushing back his bangs and kissing his forehead.
her gaze drifted over his bare chest and remembered how she had stroked it last night, tracing her fingers along his six pack as he kissed her passionately, pinning her to the mattress. she tilted her head back as he kissed her neck and her hands went up to grasp his hair. her breaths got heavier as his kisses went lower, unsure of whether to pull away or take on the pleasure headfirst. then he kissed the center of her chest, where her heart was and she looked at him then as he had never done that before, sensing he was claiming her as his. after their pasta dinner, he had proposed to her at the pasta place with the most beautiful ring she had ever seen. she had said yes before she even realized and jumped into his arms, kissing him then and there.
she smiled now, tearing up as she realized she was his now and he was hers and snuggled up against his chest, wrapping her arm around him. for a long time, she had doubted if he would stay. if they would end up together or if he'd leave her yet again. she would never admit it, but the day he broke up with her hurt more than she had showed. she had always counted on him to stay by her side, to not break the precious trust and love they had for each other. but he did and she knew it had nothing to do with her and everything to do with joo dantae and his guilt. so she let him back in with open arms after dantae had died and seokhoon was finally at peace and stopped punishing himself.
but now she couldn't help but wonder what it would take for him to be pushed into leaving her once again. what if something went wrong or he felt guilty or worst, he got tired of her and decided he couldn't be with her anymore? these thoughts haunted her for the three years they spent studying together and going on tour. yet their relationship was smooth sailing and they had gotten much closer these past few years, telling each other things like their best and worst childhood memory, their pain, their happiness, their trauma... but the one thing that haunted her that she couldn't bring herself to speak of was the thought of losing him. she avoided arguments because she couldn't stand to see him walk out of her life again.
but arguments in a relationship could not be avoided and when he stormed out the door in frustration, just like she feared he would, she did what she wished she had the first time they broke up, and rushed over and grabbed his hand.
" don't go," she whispered, misunderstanding the situation but not caring at the moment because it felt so familiar. he turned around and looked astonished at her tear-streaked face. and with that she broke down in tears, hugging him tightly. she buried her face in his chest as his arms came around her and held her tightly.
"i'm not going anywhere," he soothed, his voice sounding anxious as he had never seen her break down like this since her mother had died. she hugged him tightly, trying to get ahold of her breaths as she was crying so hard she couldn't breathe and trying to figure out how to explain her reaction as there was no way she would cry this hard over arguing whether they should go to korea for the summer or not. it wasn't natural for her and he knew that and she knew that.
he pulled back first, his hands on her arms as he bent down, looking into her eyes as she controlled her crying. "are you okay?" he asked, brushing a strand of hair out of her face.
she nodded quickly. "yes, i'm sorry. i was stressed about the exams and it built up and-"
"rona," he cut her off and she avoided his eyes, knowing it was impossible to make excuses to him when he knew her so well.
"what?" she asked quietly, almost whispering.
"i won't leave you," he said softly.
her lips trembled, looking at him in confusion, but knowing very well what he meant.
"i told you, i'll do everything with you now. i won't leave you again and nothing will break us apart again," he murmured and she looked into his eyes, seeing genuine pain and regret. "i'm sorry, rona." all of a sudden she felt bad for causing him this guilt but shut it down. it was okay to be selfish. it was okay to concentrate on her pain, rather than completely focusing on how others were hurt.
without a word, she hugged him again, overcome with relief and the feeling of letting go of her burdens. she closed her eyes as he stroked her hair and whispered apologies and knew she didn't have to worry about this being the last time she got to hold him.
thinking about the memory now brought her to tears again at how quickly he had understood her and how far they had come that she wouldn't even dream of doubting their love anymore. then she suddenly realized her tears and the last thing she wanted was him waking up to him crying on his chest the morning after their engagement, not sure how to explain to him she was thinking of the past. she gently pulled away and turned around, sleeping on her side.
but then she felt his arm come around her, pulling her into her chest and spooning her. she startled, not realizing he was awake the entire time, before relaxing and snuggling into his chest. "good morning," he whispered, pushing back a strand of her hair and kissing where her neck met her shoulder. she arched her neck, giving him access. his hand came around her chest and she looked at the ring and held his hand, kissing it before lifting their joined hands up as their rings caught the light. "they're beautiful," she mused.
she turned her head around to look at him and he was looking back at her, his eyes showing how much he adored her. "not as beautiful as you," he leaned over and kissed her softly, tugging her bottom lip as he pulled her into his chest, their skin touching as they held each other close. he pulled away for a second and looked into her eyes. "i love you, bae rona."
she smiled at him, the angelic smile she reserved for just him. "i love you too."
and she knew that would never change for the rest of their lives.
