Outside the Party

Hi. My name is Amelia Bolton, and I am 14 years old. Yes, I did say my last name is Bolton. I know where you might recognize the name. From my big brother Troy right? The captain of the East High Basketball team Troy Bolton. You might wonder, "Amelia, what do you do?" Me? I don't want to be an athlete like my brother or dad. I someday want to become the lead role in a musical while here at East High. That has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl, but one person has been in my way of that: Sharpay. I'm not really snobby like she usually is, but knowing her and what she can do, she would never let me be the lead role in a musical. It hurts me to say that, but that is the plain truth, and sometimes the truth hurts, whether you like it or not.

Anyway, we are on winter break right now, and it's our last night at the snowboarding lodge here in Albuquerque New Mexico. We've been here just for a little vacation before going back to school, and it's been a lot of fun. Although, Troy and dad have just been playing basketball in the basketball court in the hotel we have been staying at. Me and mom never like to watch them play, but as a family, we have to stick together, even if we don't want to do something but the boys do. That's one thing that sucks about having a brother, but otherwise, having a brother is amazing.

Even though all I've done is complain about him, me and Troy are actually pretty close. We've had a strong bond with each other ever since we were little, which is something that our parents love. Not a lot of siblings are close with each other they say, and they keep saying "you two are lucky to have such a great bond. I know about tons of siblings who can't stand each other, so make sure your bond never breaks." We have kept hold of our bond, but sometimes it gets hard, especially when it comes to school. We get looked down upon by other siblings at school. We even get looked down upon by Sharpay and Ryan for it. I guess it's because at the school, it's not normal to have a close bond with siblings. Most would want to keep away from each other, and that's what irritates them the most when they see us together. I hate that there is a little bit of a stigma around siblings being close, but it is what it is I guess.

Sorry for the long introduction, but I just wanted you to get to know me. Right now we are at some party somewhere to celebrate the new year since it's New Year's Eve. I guess we'll see what happens while we are here.

*At the party, Gabriella POV*

"Man this chapter is really mind-blowing! I never thought that Chris (just a random character) would do that to Makayla. I got to know what's next!" is what goes through my mind as I read the same book I have been reading for weeks. I am just so in love with this book! The plot gets more and more interesting the more I read it, and I just can't put it down.

I heard footsteps coming towards me, but I ignore whoever it is and just keep reading. I heard a very familiar sigh, and I immediately put my bookmark in my book and closed it. "Hey mom..."

"Sweetie, why aren't you in the room where the party is going on? It's our last night here, and don't you want to make this count before school starts back?" Inez says, going in front of her.

I didn't know what to say. Yes I do want to make our last night here count, but my idea of "making the last night count" was reading books all night, not being out at some party where there are people I don't know.

Inez sighed, then suddenly she takes my book away from me.

"Mom!" I say, trying to get my book back.

"Go out to the party," Inez says. "Come on, go have some fun on our last night here. Plus, it's New Year's Eve. You're supposed to have fun on New Year's Eve."

I sigh, giving in. "Can I have my book back though? I won't open it again until after the party." She lied about the last part though, but her mom doesn't know that.

Inez sigh, giving it back. "Fine, but if I catch you with that book open out there, you are grounded young lady."

I nod. "Yes mom..." I get up, keeping my book in my arms. I went out to where the main part of the party was. This ought to be not fun.

*Amelia's POV*

I was on the sidelines of the basketball court reading a book. Troy and dad had been playing basketball the last 2 hours, and, with me not really into basketball, I just grabbed the book I brought with me and read it. It has gotten boring after an hour though, but I don't want to interrupt them just because I'm bored. Mom actually doesn't know that they have been doing this though. She had been gone shopping all day. I went with her for a little bit, but I decided to let her drop me off with dad  and Troy because I was tired. I only got a little bit of a nap before they decided to come here to the basketball court. Our hotel is hosting a New Year's Eve party in the main lobby, and I want to join in on the fun, but with dad and Troy doing this, I don't know if I will be able to do that. I continued to read, but soon mom came into the room.

"How long have you guys been doing in the basketball court?" she says, which made them stop playing.

"They have been at this for 2 hours now mom," I say, not taking my eyes off my book.

"Omg," she says when she heard me say that. "You guys need to stop and get to the New Year's Eve party. It's almost 11:00 PM, and I want to help bring in the new year."

They groan as they put up the basketball.

Mom came over. "Hey sweetie. Did they bore you while I was gone?"

"Yes, but I'm glad you came and stopped them from playing," I say. "I was starting to get bored of reading this book while hearing them play."

She nods, feeling bad. "I'm sorry sweetie."

"It's okay," I say, smiling. "At least you're here now so I'm not bored anymore."

She giggled, nodding. "Well, you can stop reading now and get to the party."

I nod. "Thanks mom." I put my bookmark in the book and closed it.

The boys were ready. "We're ready." Dad says.

Mom nods, and we got to the party. This ought to be fun.
