Zurfasha’s POV
"Yaar Maya, jaldi kar! Abhi tak result nahi aaya?"
I asked, biting my lower lip, pacing back and forth like a caged animal. My heart felt like it was trying to escape my chest.
"Zuri, relax yaar... you know website busy hojati hai," Maya replied, sounding way too calm for this moment.
And then TING.
Ya Allah! My stomach dropped. I instantly covered my face with both hands.
"Main nahi dekh rahi, tu hi dekh. Meri himmat nahi hai,"
I said, squeezing my eyes shut as if not seeing it could change the outcome.
"Fine. Mat dekh,"
Maya said. Typical Maya. Calm under pressure. I envied her.
But then... silence. Two minutes. Three.
Why isn’t she saying anything?
"Maya yaar, kuch toh bol! Mujhe tension ho rahi hai!" My voice cracked. "Bata na, fail ho gayi kya? Supplementary aayi? Uff Allah! Ammi ko itna yaqeen tha mujh par—"
Before I could finish, Maya screamed a full-blown shriek and jumped on my bed.
"Kiyun cheekh rahi hai?! Waqai fail ho gayi?" I said, heart sinking.
She grabbed me by the shoulders, eyes gleaming with tears and excitement.
"Mun band kar, bewakoof larki! Tum first division se pass hui hoo... aur tum ne Balochistan mein TOP kiya hai!"
My breath hitched.
"H-huh?"
"'Huh' nahi... 'haan!' Allah ka shukar hai Zuri! Bohat bohat Mubarak ho!" she shouted and hugged me tight.
I didn’t move for a moment. Then slowly, I hugged her back, overwhelmed. My eyes welled up. That impossible dream... it had come true.
Just then, my room door burst open.
"Zuri bacha, kya hua? Cheekhne ki awaaz suni maine. Sab theek hai?"
Ammi Nida entered with concern written all over her face.
Maya ran to her, grabbed her hand, pulled her inside, shut the door, and started twirling around like a maniac.
"Auntyyyy! Mithai le aayen! Aapki beti ne TOP kiya hai!"
