Family Ties Chapter 2
I stared at my dad for a minute with my mouth hanging open. I was absolutely speechless. What did that woman want to talk to me for? I had no idea at all. But I wasn't willing to listen to the evil cow that had left my dad stranded at a hospital with newborn me in his arms, and then financially crippled him through divorce.
"Tell her I don't want to talk to her." I spat viciously, the words came out harsher than I had intended, but I was so angry. I hated that woman. I refused to acknowledge her existence, or the fact that she was my mother.
"I know my bumblebee," Began my dad, using his nickname for me. "But she says it's important. She refuses to stop calling until you talk to her."
I grimaced. I didn't want to talk to her, but it seemed like she was determined to force me to talk to her. "Fine, I'll talk to her," I snapped. "But I'm not promising that I'll be nice." I stomped into the living room and looked at the phone, placed delicately on the coffee table. I went to pick up the phone and noticed my hand trembling slightly. I stopped, took a deep breath and calmed myself before actually picking up the phone.
"Hello?" I asked with a voice like ice.
"Kathy?" said a shaky, frail old voice. "Is that my beautiful Kathy?" I had begun to soften when I heard how frail and weak she sounded, but bristled as she referred to me as 'my Kathy'. I wasn't hers and I never would be.
"How would you know if I was beautiful, you've never even seen me, after you abandoned me the day I was born?" I bit at her down the phone, trying to sound as nasty as I could. To my shock, I heard the frail voice laugh slightly.
"I should have expected that. I deserve nothing less than your anger." She said simply. I couldn't understand it, she was younger than my dad, but sounded so old and weak over the phone. I was silent for a minute before I spoke again.
"You told my dad that you wouldn't stop ringing until I talked to you, so here I am, what do you want?" I added the ice back to my voice. Trying to sound angry, but there was something wrong, and even though I had no care for the woman who was my mother, I felt like something to do with what she was going to tell me was going to hurt. Or it was going to be really bad news.
"Kathy, my daughter, I am calling to ask for your forgiveness. All those years ago, when you were born, I never should have left you. I want you to accept my apology, as this may be the last time I will be in contact with you." As she said that I went from being confused to be infuriated. She was asking for my forgiveness, then telling me the she was never going to be in touch again?! How dare she! I was so angry, as that moment I just exploded over the phone at her.
"How dare you call me, after 17 years of being vacant from my life, not once phone call before, not pone birthday card, NOTHING! Then expect me to accept your apology and forgive you, then you tell me that you'll never be in touch again?! I'll never forgive you, and I'm glad you'll never be in touch again, cause I never want to hear from you, or talk to you again!" I threw the phone back down on the table and stalked out of the living room. I paused at the stairs as I heard my dad pick up the phone and continue talking to my mother. I strained to hear what he was saying, but all I could hear was him agree to something, before placing the phone back in place and ending the phone call. I continued up the stairs to my room and sunk down onto my bed, wishing that whole phone call had never happened.
