— nahoya x reader.
— angst.
— lowercase intended.

smiley isn't really smiley.

the only people who knew who nahoya really is, is his twin brother, souya, and his childhood friend, y/n. not even his fellow toman captains and vice captains, who are his closest friends, know his real personality.

after all, his smile is just a facade, a mask.

because nahoya is just like souya when they were kids, always angry, though he wasn't a crybaby like him, they were so alike that the only thing keeping a person from mistaking them is their hair color.

it started off on one hot day during summer.

twins could be spotted at the park, playing by the sand box, laughing, when they heard the familliar sound of the ice cream truck.

"souya, do you want ice cream?"

"yeah."

"okay, wait for me here."

souya nodded in response, he was minding his own business, waiting for his twin when a group of kids approached him.

"hey, get out of here, this is our fort!"

"my big bro and i were here first!"

they snickered.

"what's a loser like you going to do against the five of us?

unbeknownst to nahoya, his brother was being attacked while he's buying ice cream.

souya couldn't do anything but curl himself into a ball and cry while the kids punch and kick him.

'big bro, help me!'

as if his plea was answered, the kids suddenly stopped. he opened his eyes, expecting to see his big brother in front of him, but he frowned when he saw that it was a girl who was shorter than him, standing protectively in front of him.

"please stop hurting him." she smiled.

"why should we listen you?! this is our fort!"

her smile widened. "i don't see a sign with your names on it though?"

they flinched and looked at one another.

"whatever! let's go, guys! we'll find a better fort!"

"stinky brats." he heard her murmur before she looked at souya.

she smiled at him, and this time, it was genuine.

"i'm sorry about what they did to you, can you stand up?"

he nodded, she assisted him while standing up, souya dusted off the sand on his clothes.

"souya!" he heard her brother's voice and his footsteps.

"what happened?!"

"he was attacked by a group of kids."

nahoya looked at the girl who spoke, who's smiling.

'her smile is annoying, it's so fake.'

"what?! where are they?"

"i'm fine big bro, she helped me, she smiled at them and they ran away."

"you smiled at them? you should've punched them in the face, look at what they did to my twin!"

"you know, a smiling face is much more scarier than an angry face."

"oh, your ice cream is melting." she continued.

after that day, there had been an unspoken rule between the three of them, every four in the afternoon, they'd eat ice cream at that park, before, nahoya used to only buy two ice creams, but now, it's three.
