The two young princes were walking beside each other in the grand halls of the Asgardian palace, having just finished lunch with other Asgardian children. In terms of Midgard's aging, Thor and Loki were about 14 and 13, respectively.
"Well that lunch was boring," Thor noted dully.
"You're so overdramatic, brother. I thought it was fine," Loki replied with an annoyed edge.
"Fine for you!" Thor stopped and turned to Loki. Loki stopped with him, confused. "You were hanging out with that one boy the whole time. You didn't stop to talk to me once, and everyone there was dreadfully boring. They always want to gain my favor because I'm the crown prince and all that, but I can always tell when they're just trying to flatter me. Why were you with him? You always stick with me during those lunches."
Thor noticed Loki turn slightly pink, but the change was only for a fraction of a second, and he shook it off well. "Are you really so pathetic that you can't go one little lunch without my company? You would have a good mind to work on your people skills brother."
Thor was ready to fight Loki over his offensive quip, but he was intrigued. Loki was acting differently. He was nervous, and although he was great at hiding it, Thor was able to see straight through his arrogant facade. Thor almost never saw his brother nervous.
"Why are you acting like that?" Thor asked.
"Like what?" Loki replied, offended. Thor kept his focus on Loki's eyes and meticulously controlled body language, and he could tell that he was scared about something. Thor smiled triumphantly at this strange new power imbalance, in which he had the upper hand over his brother. He replied in an amused, vaguely victorious voice.
"Brother, I can see it in your eyes, you're scared about something. What is it?" he demanded. Loki became a more obvious shade of pink at the accusation.
"Don't be ridiculous. I'm not scared of anything."
"Hmm. Not scared of anything except this boy it seems. Why? Did he threaten you? Did the great Loki Odinson really get threatened by a child?" Thor was laughing now at this idea.
"He's not a child! He's not much older than me and not much younger than you." Loki was getting visibly upset, and Thor was implored to egg him on.
"So you admit, you're threatened by him."
"What? No of course I'm not threatened by him."
"If you're not threatened by him then why are you acting like this? Who even is he?"
"He's just... I don't know Thor, just a friend I met!" Loki regained his footing. "And after all, it seems to me that you're the one who's threatened by him. Afraid that some boy is going to keep your brother from keeping you company during lunch? Stop acting like a child." Loki tried to turn away but Thor persisted, now angry.
"No Loki, I want to know. Why did you spend the whole lunch with him? I don't believe that he's just some 'friend you met'. You never want to talk with someone for that long unless there's something to gain. What, were you trying to steal something from him?"
"Believe it or not Thor, he's not some new victim that I'm trying to exploit! I can know people and want to be friends with them!"
"Loki do you even hear yourself? You've always hated the idea of friends, you don't trust anyone. You've never known sincerity! What makes this kid different?! Why do you like him so much?! Why are you-"
"Will you shut your mouth for just one second you probing prat! Thor I-" Loki turned away for a moment, as if trying to discover a way out. Seeming to give up on this attempt, he turned back and continued in a low voice. "Thor, I like this boy, and I won't have your desperate need for company at lunch ruining that for me." The hint of strangled tears began to glaze Loki's eyes, and Thor was taken aback when he noticed. His brother almost never cried, and he felt the deep sense that there was something wrong. He didn't know how to react.
"You like this boy? What is that supposed to mean?" Thor was entirely oblivious to what Loki was trying to tell him.
"Don't be idiotic, brother." Loki looked at Thor darkly, his arms crossed defensively, eyes darting carefully about the hall to ensure that there were no eavesdroppers. He waited in silent agony for a sign of understanding on his brother's face. Loki pursed his lips when Thor's eyes began to widen in realization.
"You...like him? You mean, you like him like... like how I like the girl I like?"
Loki continued to stare at him darkly. He couldn't tell if Thor's reaction was a negative or a positive one, and he was preparing to defend himself, assuming that it would be negative.
"If that's the only analogy that your grape-sized brain has enough capacity to conjure, yes, I suppose so." Thor scrunched his eyebrows together slightly. He had never imagined that two boys could like each other the way that a boy and girl could. But in his mind, there wasn't anything that would contradict the morality of the idea.
"I see. Well, this is strange for me brother."
"Why should it be strange for you?" Loki replied, his eyes further darkening.
"Why, you've never liked anyone, even platonically your entire life. This idea of you sincerely liking another person is going to take some getting used to." Thor chucked. Loki was mildly taken aback by Thor's quick acceptance.
"Well, that's your problem brother, not mine," Loki replied sarcastically. Thor noticed Loki's body language change. He was more relaxed now, more free. The young princes continued to walk on the path that they had been standing in place on. Suddenly, a question came to Thor's mind.
"Loki, could you marry another boy? I've never heard of a king having anything except a queen." He looked Loki up and down. "Not that you'll be the one becoming king of course."
Loki shook his head while giving his strange smile. He often used it to charm people when he wanted to manipulate them, but Thor just found it generally creepy.
"No brother, I believe not. Our rulebooks seem to favor only pairs of men and women."
"Hmm. Quite strange. I'll have to change that for you once I become king," Thor remarked. Loki chuckled in response.
"You need not worry brother. When I become king, I'll change the laws myself."
Thor chucked and smacked Loki playfully on the back, and Loki smiled good-humoredly.
