Kate started to fumble with her purse, pulling out a bottle of pills. Pills I thought she stopped dealing. Kate notices my staring and waves it off.
"It's temporary." She states.
I roll my eyes but leave the topic alone, not wanting to push it any further.
"It's getting late." Kate says a minute later, checking her watch.
I stare up at the darkening sky and thick, puffy clouds that look about to burst. I nodded my head in agreement.
"I'm gonna go." Kate says as she and Simon stand up, Kate being Simon's only way home.
"Aight. I'm going to stay here for a little bit longer. You guys go." I say and shoo them off.
Minutes after Kate and Simon leave, the clouds can no longer hold their rain. I get off of my chair and look up, my face getting splattered with harsh rain drops. I've always loved the rain. Loved how rain can look so never - ending and then stop a second later. And so I run, fueled by my love for the rain.
I run underneath the now empty clouds, underneath the navy blue sky, through the trees and back again.
My shoes have never looked muddier and my smile has never been bigger.
I run out of the clearing and down the sidewalk towards my car. I don't look back or slow down, not even when crossing the street.
I sprint across the wet pavement until I see a flash of light. I stop in the middle of the road like a deer caught in headlights. The car comes screeching to a stop, not even 3 feet away from me. My eyes go wide and I freeze like I'm bolted to the ground.
The driver instantly opens the car door and runs out, stopping to look at me.
"Deena Johnson?" The unfamiliar voice calls out.
I turn away from the car and stare at them, being unable to see who they are.
"Uh, yeah?" I nod, still unsure.
"We're in History together! I'm Sam!" She announces.
Sam.
Sam Fraser. The girl I've had a crush on since freshman year. The girl I didn't even think knew my name and the girl who almost ran me over.
I wipe away my water stained cheeks and rub my eyes, trying to get them to focus in the dark.
"Get in the car, you look soaked!" Sam says.
I obey as she opens the passenger side door and I realize I'm shivering from the rain.
"The hell are you doing out here?" She asks once she starts driving.
I wipe my eyes once more. "Running." I answer bleakly while trying to control my nerves from being so close to Sam.
"Yeah no shit." She says, shaking her head.
I replay the scene in my mind, still trying to recall what happened.
"Why were you running in the freezing cold rain?" She asks, her hands on the steering wheel.
